R32s back on the (A)

I've heard from two different people that they've seen a 10 Car train signed for Mott Avenue round Jay and the Euclid Exp trk someday late last week. It could've been a (C) reroute but the 10 car part throws that out the window. I cant confirm it myself since I been working with robots the last few days. Just giving photographers a heads up.

That would be nice indeed. Rode on an R32 (C) on Saturday (#3672-3) and it was in fine shape (clean, too)- we were rerouted and went flying through the Rutgers tube. Nice to get a ride on vintage stock for a change.

I wonder if the a/c's will work for this year. Would be nice to get an R32 over the bay again heading to Rock Park or Far rock. And on the flip side, it would be nice to not have to walk a whole car length for the C when it pulls into the station as it runs R46s.

I didn't know any of them were still around. The R-32 was a great piece of rolling stock. Tough as nails and still a good-looker after so many years.

Are these R-32's, the set that was at Fresh Pond yard? The ones that were Graffiti, then washed.

Can't be. I saw them in Fresh Pond yard on Saturday, and it would take a lot of work to get them back in service. I don't know what their plans are.

So, just what is the current car count of the R-32's still on the property?
Those that are revenue ready and those that need a check-out, and spiffied up. (AC) How Many?

Does anyone know why the d type triplexes were retired ahead of the standards or Q's?? Did any of them undergo rebuilding??

I remember as a kid riding them from Astoria & aside from being a bit sluggish, they really had a 19th century feel to them with the lighting, seating & drab interior paint. After getting off an R-27/30 with their bright flourescent lights & pretty pink seats, I felt like I was in a time warp.

THe Multis were retired even earlier. The NYCTA didn't want to deal with articulated cars any more. It seems that the concept of articulation which started with the D types in the 1920s had passed its prime by the 1950s since besides the BMT Bluebirds, the Chicago artics were the only articulated PCC rapid transit cars ordered. By the time CTA was ready to order a full fleet of cars, the concept of articulation was abandoned in favor of married pairs and Boston's PCC rapid transit cars were also in the married pair configuration.

I mean, aside from articulation, were they maintenance intensive?
Any motormen, sorry T/O's, out there that ran them on a regular basis share any thoughts on how they ran, accellerated, braked etc.?
By the time I rode them like I said before, they were sluggish on fairly level elevated track, but who knows by late '64 the first & only time I rode them, they might have been sent out on the road with dead motors.

Also, who built them, Pressed Steel, ACF?? Memory fades here.

I don't think it was the articulation. It was that the old cars on the BMT by 1965 were all to be on the Eastern Division, and they didn't want revenue trains of Triplexes running on the Willie B.

Yes, but what about the the Myrtle-Chambers and Bway Bklyn local ? The R16's covered only the Jamaica line fully, a few Bway-Bklyn locals, once a day Canarsie, once in a blue moon Myrtle. 2/3rds of the equipment allotment were pre-war cars. They would have had to send the R27's east to cover the other WBB trains and put the pre-war cars back on the Brighton and 4th Ave locals.

The Triplexes also had no signage for the Eastern Division except for Nassau ST and Chambers St. They did show up on the 3/TT West End Nassau and deadheaded to ENY in the last couple of years.

I also read that the R-32s were being delivered at such a rapid pace that they were running out of space, so it was decided to yank the Triplexes even though they were still running like tops with virtually no maintenance done on them.

All Triplexes were built by Pressed Steel.

AFAIK they received very little maintenance and still ran well. I never rode on them myself, although we were in the city during their final week of service in July of 1965 and rode exclusively on the Southern Division. I did get to ride on a few Norton trains of shiny new R-32s, though. From what I've heard, the Triplexes accelerated on the slow side, but once they got up to speed, they could really move.

They could have sent the Triplexes to the IND yards to get rid of the worst of the R-1's. They were drop;ping like flies awaiting late R38's so much so that they pulled 40 ex-Southern Division Standards off the Sea Beach rip track, sent to ENY, so as to send as many R16's to the GG.

That was a damn shame. It seems like the TA had a bug up their butt to get rid of them. They could have put some of them in storage like they did with some R-16s.

Storing the R-16s turned out to be a good idea when some R-46s showed up with cracked trucks.

TA still has not learned a lesson from mothballing rather than over-scrapping when other equipment fails them

1) The Triplexes verses the R-1's
2) R30GOH is face of growing patronage from Unltd Metrocard and neighborhood regentrication
3) R32's Phase II's verses the R44 and extant R42

That was in August of 1966. The last of the Triplexes were pulled (prematurely) a year earlier. Hindsight being 20/20, it would have been a good idea.

IIRC 32 R-16s were borrowed from ENY and sent to the GG and an equal group of condemned standards were yanked off the scrap line, had their S for Scrap painted over and put back in revenue service, mostly on the rush hour-only Broadway-Brooklyn local.
