THe Multis were retired even earlier. The NYCTA didn't want to deal with articulated cars any more. It seems that the concept of articulation which started with the D types in the 1920s had passed its prime by the 1950s since besides the BMT Bluebirds, the Chicago artics were the only articulated PCC rapid transit cars ordered. By the time CTA was ready to order a full fleet of cars, the concept of articulation was abandoned in favor of married pairs and Boston's PCC rapid transit cars were also in the married pair configuration.
