I saw one of those new stainless steel benches yesterday.

I wouldn't sit on it on an outdoor platform, with the hot sun shining on it. :-/

I can't think of any outdoor stations with a bench that isn't covered by the canopy.

The new benches at outdoor stations will prove to be the adult version of the playground slide and their hot, mirror-like surfaces.

Is it American made or the cheap Japanese variety that will start to rust within a few years?

How am I supposed to take seriously someone who makes ignorant comments like this?

If they don't do major construction where it might be beneficial to have 3 straight days to work without interruption over Presidents Day Weekend, when do you suggest they do that work? The reality is while some people do have to go to work on federal holidays, it is still far fewer than the number who need to get to work today, and I can't think of many transit agencies that run weekday service on Presidents Day (TCAT in Ithaca, NY is the only one that immediately comes to mind, Ride On in Montgomery County, MD operated a weekday schedule on Presidents Day for a few years and now operates a modified weekday schedule in which service is provided on all routes during their usual spans of service for a weekday but at decreased frequency).

Funny that you're simultaneously angry that the MTA is throwing away perfectly good benches and angry that the MTA is reselling unhygenic benches.

1. You have to walk 1/2 mile from Sheepshesd Bay station to catch the B4. (and you pointed out this horrible service cut in the first place - - also it's ironic that you revisted this issue in the same story.)

2. The B7 does not go to the F train, it ends at Coney Island Ave during daytime hours until 8 PM (and you live in Brooklyn, I presume).

3. You can also take the B8 or B35 to the F train. Better yet, you can avoid the shuttle bus AND regular bus completly by taking the Q to Prospect Park, then board the Frankie to Botanic Garden (for 2/3/4) or Franklin terminal (for the C - - A late nights)

4. The Q trackwork was cancalled the weekend of 2/11-13 (due to "The storm that never showed up" - - how do you think they are going to make up for lost time when you wanted to forego Presidents Day? They had work on other lines too and that is a necessity - - just what day do you really think is a good time to do this work? None outside of rush hours. They cannot use the weekend of March 3-4 as a make up date because the D will not be running between Manhattan and Brooklyn due to scheduled work.

5. Benches? How can you say they are "perfectly good" wooden benches then turn around and say they are selling benches with bedbugs - - take one home?

No one said that a Saturday schedule was not appropriate. That is quite different than suspending the route altogether and replacing it with buses. It would only be justified if Washington's Birthday has the same number of workers as on a Saturday. Government offices and the banking and financial sectors were closed. Many other offices remained open.

First of all we don't know if anyone is buying. Only that they are being offered for sale. I have no problem with them trying to sell it if the reason for getting rid of them wasn't that they are unhygienic. Sort of contradictory logic in my opinion.

1. I brought it up again to show how the MTA constantly contradicts themselves.

2. Sloppiness on my part. No excuse for that one. I should have thought that one out a little more.

3. Someone pointed that out in the comments.

4. You are assuming that President's Day was a make-up for the weekend lost and that the day wasn't scheduled anyway. They could have just picked another weekend other than March 3-4.

5. I don't believe they are infested with bedbugs. There might have been a few sporadic cases but what do you expect with benches that are never maintained? They are "perfectly good". All they need is some varnish or polyurethane and maybe a little sanding and they would look like new. The MTA makes it seem like they are unsalvageable and if that were the case why would anyone buy one?

Hmmm, and there are two sets of wooden benches in the stationhouse mezzanine. Do you really think that someone will use the outdoor bench (on the Coney Island-bound side) when it rains, or snows? What good is the "weather protection" if the temperature is 10 degrees outside?

There are international standards for grades of stainless steel. The manufacturer only provides what has been ordered. American, Japanese or other origins, it doesn't matter. It's not their fault if some reseller tries to fool uneducated customers. I don't know if the stainless fence market compares to used car sales market for that but I do know that NASA and Boeing and many others buy their parts from Japan because nobody else is able to make parts of that grade and precision.

Your comment reminded me of people complaining about the small size of the bucket seats of the made in Japan R62, when it was actually the TA who ordered them at those specs and the same seats were already used on the American made R44 and R46.

BTW, regarding Sheepshead Bay, I'm more concerned about the decline of its fishing boat fleet than anything else.

The labor to refinish hundreds of benches would probably cost more than replacing them, and they would still require more maintenance. Even if the new benches rust, it would require less sanding than a wood bench to make it look like new.

I would guess a new bench costs $1,000 plus if they are selling them for $650 each. Maybe it would cost more to totally refinish them, but if they just applied a protective coating once every three years, sanding them down would not even be necessary. And if they were not willing to do that much, why would thy bother removing rust?

Do you think the stainless steel benches will last anywhere as long as the wood benches? And I wonder if they were even cheaper.
