Why would you need to empty out a through running train?

Because 98% of the patrons are headed to Manhattan. With 7 NJT branches and 3 MN lines, what are the odds that you would serve anyone on the same train headed between New Jersey and MN turf ? Slim to none. If I am going from Ridgewood, NJ to Brewster, do you think I will "settle" for Danbury ? No.

Jamaica is not Manhattan. It is not a destination for 95 - 98% of the ridership. It was made for cross platform transfers for train headed in the same direction.

"Cooperation" is an vast oversimplification of the issue. Amtrak does not thru-route their service with any other passenger railroad except VIA Rail at Niagara Falls, and that takes 1 - 2 hours. The principle argument is not 2 different agencies, but 2 incompatible RR's with peaks in opposite directions.

There is no way that MN would put it's high OTP on the line with a schlock outfit like NJT, which doesn't even have an operating plan in NYPS>

Now I'll admit there is some need for some inner NE corridor alternative service to expensive Amtrak between Trenton and New Haven, but I am under under no delusions that dwell time in NYPS would be any less than 20 minutes.

Brilliant. Detach the loco, turn it, run it around the train, re-couple it and do brake tests all over again. Costs nothing, right? Sounds like a better idea to keep it running into GCT.

I understand your point. However, when it comes to train dwell times, the dwell need not exceed the time necessary to get the passengers off the train. LIRR has a similar situation at Jamaica when there is large turnover on trains of people both entering and exiting. I don't think that you're going to get dwell times less than 60 seconds, for sure, but I also know that 20 minutes is not the right figure either. I don't think it takes people 10 minutes to disembark.

The advantage of through routing the NJT and MNRR services is that you don't need any extra NYP slots, and MNRR can increase the number of trains it operates into NYC without large capital expenditure. One-seat NJ/NH service is nice, but not really all that useful, as you noted.

At the end of the day, if it can't be done, then the idea of seizing LIRR NYP slots is an option as well, but this avoids having to do that.

So you send an AM rush NJT train that is now goes to Sunnyside to New Haven instead. That's nice, but is doesn't get you a slot, and adds only reverse peak service on MNRR.

The other way around, there are no inbound AM rush East River tunnels slots available, there are no NJT runs from Sunnyside to piggyback onto, so you cannot add MN service to NYPS in the peak direction.

Ditto the above arguments in the PM rush, just reverse the directions.
You haven't solved any problems.

Each railroad will demand a substantial cushion so as not to magnify delays on one side of the Hudson to the other side.

You need to watch an NJT 10 car MLV train some morning. It takes 10 minutes to clear the train, platform, and stairs. Forget about reversing the escalators.

The problem is tunnel slots.

Oh, and with "through-running", you're doubling the length of crew runs and moving the storage problem elsewhere. There is no historical precedent; it's not going to be done.

Do you know what a fiasco it is to disconnect all the 480v lines and MU cables, then put it back together. That's why they don't cut off-peak consists anymore.

Then there's work rules, 3 point protection, electricians, etc. Labor intensive. Forget about 20 minute equipment turns, so bad crew/equipment utilization.

You are correct: I was thinking about a reverse peak NJT train would be coming out of Sunnyside.

I still don't know about those dwell times though. And just whose railroad is it west of NYP anyway?

You have to turn the whole train though... there's an order to things, the same end of each car always points towards the engine and away from the cab car... if you have a cab car on both ends and a wye to move the engine, this order is destroyed, and you will eventually end up with trains with cars pointing the wrong way. NJT does not allow this to happen, but MBTA does get lazy and you often get the A ends coupled to each other.

The LIRR runs west of Harold into LIC, hence the mixing bowl at Harold.
LIRR has a joint operating agreement into NYPS, which means more power than just trackage rights.

Just the Giants train(s). The crews would presumably change. Outlying terminals have far fewer trains laying around during the day than during the night or the weekend.

I think we should start by third rail electrifying the West Side line and run the electrics before anything diesel. They would serve JFK Airtrain, Mets games, beaches, etc...

You know, I've always wondered if the rumoured problems at that power plant and the poor state of the New Haven catenary scared MNRR out of electrifying the Upper Haarlem with catenary...

There are plans to replace all third rail shoes on the M7A to over-under dual capable ones as installed on the latest batch of M8. Add LIRR cab signaling to those. On the LIRR side, they just need to get those shoes to the M7.

Not enough service to justify that. Only justification would be if all of Metro-North gets third rail replaced with overhead.

Well, didn't they waste our money building that or what? Should have built a station to link the Atlantic Branch with NJT's Hoboken Division instead.

The roof-top air chutes on the M7A will not clear the 63rd Street tunnel when it opens. There is no such thing as a universal MU car of any sort.

I've never seen the dimensions of the lower level of the 63rd Street Tunnel anyhow. Anyone got a drawing?

Amtrak wise, it's about the same as the Keystone Corridor... and, this would allow the M8s to run in place of the diesel sets on the Poughkeepsie runs, which would allow for trains longer than 7 cars (and there's not enough cars for all Bombardier sets to have this many cars), and thus alleviate some crowding on the full length runs. Most importantly it would add flexibility for Metro-North.

And the tracks north of Poughkeepsie would be relatively easy to upgrade to 125MPH speeds, so the AEM-7s can be used to their full potential.

The complaints will be that the overhead gantries will block the view of the Hudson (Metro North went through some effort to clear the view of utility poles / abandoned RR buildings), but they don't need to be n shaped, they could be T shaped.

So, because under-running/over-running shoes didn't work out 50 years ago they won't work today. Technology has improved. I carry a computer around in my pocket that would have taken up a whole room 50 years ago.

You're joking, right? First of all, what M8s; second, you've got the low platforms at Manitou and Poughkeepsie (the latter not in revenue service but could be used as a reserve); third, you're implying that you'll still have duplicate third-rail infrastructure up to Croton-Harmon for the M3As and M7As, which is absurd and a real waste of dough.

Eh? Amtrak's ready to retire the AEM-7s in favor of the ACS-64s, for one; for another, no railroad outside the NEC has ever seen Class 7 tracks (no, not even the Keystone Corridor) and the current plans according to the FRA are for no faster than 110 mph (Class 6) . . . and for still another, unless you double the number of trains to Albany and beyond, it's still not nearly enough to justify all this electrification and re-electrification. The only thing that would justify it at all is, on top of increasing the NYP-ALB service, total changeover by Metro-North from third rail to overhead.
