Yes, five years ago. There's a major component maintenance schedule that works out to replacing or remanufacturing major mechanical components of the car, along with other work and inspection every few years, that reduces failure potential so that the cars won't need to have the kind of teardown and full rebuild they required in the past.

I recall during our "summit lunch" you said the decision to scrap the remaining R44s was done over the objections of the mechanical people who examined the fleet, no?

I would have thought NYCT management would have learned from its own history (early problems with the R-44s forcing them to run prewar cars--some of which had already been sold to a scrap dealer, IIRC--longer than anticipated), similar to what's happening with the R32s today...

Of the 272 cars that were scrapped - I believe that 212 could have remained viable and reliable for several more years had the funding been approved for the enhancement program for the last 100 R-44 cars. That same program, that we performed on 172 R-44s, previously, boosted reliability to historic highs.

That sounds like a superb short time fix.

As long as we're fantasizing....

They might present some passenger training issues.

I can hear all the WTF's now, as eleven, or twelve car sets squeezed in to the stations.

Perhaps it would be best to confine them to BMT/East, where nine car sets would be the max allowable, and reuse the sixty foot R143, R160, and 160B's on the rest of the "B" division.

How much of a shortfall of failing R42, R32's and R44 we talkin' about?

How many PA4-3-2 are becoming available?

It would have been nice if those R110Bs were Rehabbed and made compatible with the R143s, and R160s.

Nine cars are nine cars.

I'd like to see those Broad Street cars from Philly sporting around NYC.

There was once a time WASHINGTON D.C. TRANSIT bailed out the NYC Surface Lines with surplus Fish Bowls.

Anybody from Buschat remember and care to comment?

The MTA wants all NTT's, for reasons of simplicity and efficiency. PATCO is a tiny system with a tiny fleet and a tiny budget.

What the R32's need is the 6 year SMS work they probably haven't gotten recently.

MTA has a nasty habit of being its own worst enemy..

When the TA scrapped the R10/16/27/30,and replaced them with the R68's..that left us with MAJOR CAR SHORTAGE..
It happened during the 60 with the BMT/IND..after they scrapped the D UNITS.. the Queens division R units were breaking down in vast numbers..and they didnt purchase enough R38 to cover.

Just like today..they didnt purchase enough R160's..thats the real reason the two subway lines were eliminated.

172 cars is a very good number. That would be 144 for 18 trains plus a 20% spare factor - give or take a fraction. The problem was that:
1) Some of the 172 enhanced cars were part of the 60 with frame issues.
2) The parts used to enhance the E-Cam propulsion on the R-44s were needed for the R-68 SMS for budgetary reasons.
3) The Axles & bull gears on the R-44 were needed for the R-68s due to premature erosion of those bull gears.

SO to sum it up - some had to die so others could live.

R-7: 1440
R-7A: 1575*
R-9: 1689, 1801 (static display), 1802*.

Exactly 20 of them known in existence, in some form, out of 1703 cars originally built. The asterisk (*) means those cars are on MTA/NYCT property.

Polite goes with Maturity. People with time on their hands bust ba**s. If I still worked 50 hours a week I'd hardly see any of this.
Now I'm retired and temporarily stuck at home recovering from kidney surgery, so I spend a lot of time on here.
Some people are right some of the time, it's wrong to lash out against anyone in particular at certain times. And there is nice way to correct them, too. Not derogatory remarks.

PA4 Cars for "J" and "Z" are 95 enough?

The PATH received 95 PA 4s back in 1987-88. Is that enough, or would the PA3s be needed too?
Thet are Stainless Steel, three doors per side and are cabe cars.

This info was garnered from a PATH websit and may be outdated
PATH has a fleet of 333 cars (reduced from 348 cars) that are in active revenue service. There are five models: PA1, PA2, PA3, PA4 and PA5. PATH cars are 51 ft (15.5 m) long, with a width of approximately 9'-2¾" (2.8 m). They can achieve a maximum speed of 70 mph (112 km/h). Each car seats 35 passengers, on seats that line the sides of the cars, with a larger number of standees in each car.

The PA1 cars were built by St. Louis Car in 1965. PA2 cars were built in 1966–67, also by St. Louis. Hawker Siddeley built the PA3 cars in 1972. The PA4s were built by Kawasaki Heavy Industries in 1986–88. The PA5s are currently being built by Kawasaki Heavy Industries in 2008–10.

PA1, PA2, and PA3 cars have painted aluminum bodies, and have two doors on each side. Back-lit panels above the doors display the destination of that particular train: HOB for Hoboken, JSQ for Journal Square, NWK for Newark, 33 for 33rd Street, and WTC for World Trade Center. (Some of the older PA3 signs contain such overzealous punctuation as J.S.Q., N.W.K. and 33RD. ST.). The MBTA's Blue and Orange Line cars, built in 1978–79 and 1980–81 respectively are based on the PA3.

PA4 cars have stainless steel bodies, and have three doors on each side. Back-lit displays above the windows (between the doors) display the destination of that particular train.

Would only 95 cars and the modifications necessary for the Eastern Division be worth the six year service time until the R179s come ashore?

true.
My take on this is we dont need his type of "correction"..

Most of us are old enough to be his father or grandfather..ALL GROWN MEN.
I dont NEED him in any way..
to answer questions..
to hijack potentially important threads..
to be a total jackass to everyone here because he has issues to work out.

He wants to be a big man? Then he better be prepared to take as well as give.
