That would be 144 for 18 trains plus a 20% spare factor - give or take a fraction. The problem was that:1) Some of the 172 enhanced cars were part of the 60 with frame issues. 2) The parts used to enhance the E-Cam propulsion on the R-44s were needed for the R-68 SMS for budgetary reasons. 3) The Axles & bull gears on the R-44 were needed for the R-68s due to premature erosion of those bull gears. SO to sum it up - some had to die so others could live. |
