Daily News Article About Dangers of Platform Extenders at Union Square |
|
Posted by heypaul on Wed Dec 15 06:11:41 2010 I was amused at the photo at the top of the article, which seems to highlight the gaps that exist on a stairway.I know there is a gap extenders at the Times Square shuttle platform, but where else? As a fix to the problem that was experienced last Friday, could the TA install an emergency pressure release valve adjacent to the individual gap extenders that would allow for quick release for anyone trapped? Towards the south end of the train there is space between the train and the platform and there are no gap fillers.I don't think the report makes a difference of a customer falling at the gap filler or just between the train and the platform. |

There might be complaints, but there are still emergency brake valves for passenger use on subway cars, even though there was a time when they were seriously abused.I think having an emergency release valve for the extenders is absolutely necessary. |

It amazing how the Daily News is always so wise after the event.Apparently, they were wiser than the TA. The TA had evidence of a problem by virtue that Union Square had twice the number of passenger accidents than the next closest station. One would have hoped they realized this and had taken actions to rectify the situation. If they would focus public attention on a problem before it becomes critical they might actually do some good. The official response would have been that the situation existed for umpteen years without serious incident. |

I think having an emergency release valve for the extenders is absolutely necessary. They HAD emergency releases. Actually, they had emergency releasers. They were C/Rs that were Gap Filler Operators! Wouldn't it be nice if MTA rehired some laid off S/As to re-man the Gap Fillers? Also adds eyes and ears to the platform. Just some more $.02. |

I was thinking about a release valve or like the TSQ shuttle the T/O can retract the GF; but there is a problem in that if you release the GF to free a trapped person they might fall onto a shoe and be electricuted. Also, people holding the trapped person might be electricuted. The NYCT needs a procedure for this. You must shut off 3rd rail power before releasing the GF. I don't know if GF's power and the 3rd rail are connected. |

Yea but after a few months the Daily Rag would run a story about lazy conductors standing around at 14th St all day with their only job is to control the gap fillers. |

Did one Gap Filler Operator control all the extenders on one platform? And was it a moving platform that was moved by pulling on a big lever or did the conductor just press a button? As far as an emergency release button in the current system, a relatively tamper proof method would be to put a release button at the motorman's position for the local track. |

The Gap Filler pulled on a big lever to extend and retract the gap fillers. He sat behind a couple of horizontal poles, in a little "pocket" on a stool.I'm sure if interested, management could okay the "alteration" of an unmanned booth to pare it down to fit the old position and make it operable with buttons. Tamper proof on local tracks, but what about express tracks? And as has been stated, I wouldn't open the gap filler without first seeing what the problem was, because I wouldn't want anyone to drop onto the trucks third rail shoe. "I'll save you!" ZZZZAAAPPPPPP!!!! "Ooopsie!" |

Before the Gap Operator retracted the platform, he would have to yell out in a clear masculine/deep voice "All those not pinned between the platform and the gap filler must get off, so that we can rescue the man/woman who is being crushed to death!!!" |

Only the gap fillers at T/Sq Shuttle were operated by a large manual lever. The gap fillers at both 14 St and Bkln Br were controlled by a device that was almost identical to the master controllers on the BMT el cars. |

Thanks Randy, that was my (not from personal first-handmemories) recollection too. What about the gap fillers at South Ferry? When was the platform control eliminated at 14 St? Seems to me the signal equipment was from the 1960s. |

How about capacity sensors, like on new elevators. Anthing inside the space between the filler and the train, stops that individual gap filler. The conductor can not open until all gap fillers are closed, so if one is obstructed, no doors are openned. A flashing light on one of the poles near the gap filler will show which gap filler did not open fully. The conductor than can open the other half of the train and investigate. |
