Assuming Dutchrailnut is correct, and any newer cars for either RR are delivered with the "compatible" shoes, the issue is solved. This would be a great move toward unification. Next should be the change of the catenary S of the phase break to 60hz so any EMUs can run anywhere with less deadweight electrical hardware.
