IMO they looked old, cumbersome & outdated when new.To me that original front looked intimidating and angry. The redesigned front we now know looks more passive. But that was the BMT, they experimented with the D Type and it worked out just fine. In fact as discussed here many times, when they were retired and scrapped, they were in the best condition of their lives. Unfortunately, the NYC riding public and politicians like new.
