First time since 1964 (Shea's inaugural season) the Mets have had the honor:

fiogf49gjkf0d
Well, in a way, it was. Shea Stadium was an outdated multipurpose stadium, with FAR too many seats, than what was necessary to supply for the actual fans coming into the ballpark. Outside of opening day, you could see a lot of empty seats in the upper deck during the news ballgame highlights. The Mets needed a new ballpark, because they were losing money on unsold seats that no one was buying. Can't stay at Shea forever with that track record. Imagine if the Madoff fiasco occurred, while the Mets were still playing at Shea. It would have been an EVEN WORSE financial disaster for Fred Wilpon. Citi Field may be just another retread of classic ballparks, but it's a better park, business-wise.

There were a ton of empty seats on television last night and will be more tonight. There are empty seats on television all the time. The problem for MLB is that the most expensive seats are behind home plate and when those rich people don't show up the seats are empty and those camera shots are the most common camera shots on television.

Forget about comparing Shea vs. Citi. I'm not doing that. I'm simply saying that Shea was not a dump. It was old and and it was time to move on, but it wasn't a dump. It has some pluses.

fiogf49gjkf0d
True, but keep in mind that the lull in attendance is not limited to Citi Field. Look at the attendance figures for Marlins Park. Opening day was a sellout, and now that's gone down since then. Again, if the Mets stayed at Shea, they'd be worse off. A multipurpose stadium with only ONE team playing in the venue, especially in NYC, will sink you financially. Why else would the Yankees move into a new stadium of their own? Too many seats, not enough demand, means a loss of $$$$$. Obviously, the state of the economy is a factor as to why attendance is down. It's just too expensive for some folks to go to an MLB game these days. As for the empty seats behind home plate, do you get the feeling some of those people are not real fans to begin with? That's not to say that it is all the time, but who's gonna sit there if it costs too much to be down there anyway? I know I wouldn't.

Yankee Stadium is multipurpose. They have a Madonna concert, rugby and ethnic soccer on the books.

Mets should hire actors to sit in the empty seats. If the owner of the seats shows up the actor goes back to the employee room. This has been done by other sports leagues and WWE.

Not what it means. The type that were built to also house football are terrible for baseball. While granted, it wasn't as bad as a real football stadium made to also be able to do baseball (Like Dolphin or whatever it's name is now Stadium), but that said, it was still utilitarian 60's construction and was terribly outdated.

The fact that Shea could accommodate football was not one of it's weak point.

Small hard seats and narrow aisles was a weak point. The height was too, but that only mattered when you got stuck upstairs. And most of those people up there enjoyed it because they went up there to drink beer and smoke pot.

If you had good seats, it was fine.

Baseball is a funny sport because there's much argument over how to angle the seats.

So were The Vet in Philly (2 ASG's in 33 seasons) and Three Rivers in Pittsburgh (2 ASG's in 30 seasons). It was more the Doubleday/Wilpon ownership of the 80's not seeing it as a priority.

Planning the next several years of ASG's will be hard to do with a massive NL glut of parks: Washington, Miami, Cincinnati, San Diego, and Philadelphia all have new-ish parks while the AL only has Minnesota on the table.

It's because MSG is not in the same situation that Shea was in. They don't compare. As for MSG, they generate a lot of revenue, because of the location, and two major sports teams that play there. Yes, it is old, but they can make improvements in that venue, that Shea could never take advantage of. Shea's circular design was it's biggest weakness.

Shea was circular like so many National League parks of that era.

MSG generates revenue because it is multipurpose. Yet people complain that Shea was multipurpose. Unreal.

It was time to move on from Shea to Citi, but that does not make Shea a dump. The box seats and first tier were fine for watching games. Upstairs was kind of high.

MSG has issues. They only allow access from 7th Avenue which results in a very long exit time from the venue. They did this on purpose to make the MSG experience less enjoyable.

And MSG is circular while the trend in new venues is the opposite. MSG architecture was inspired by a venue in Utica, NY.

The Nationals also saw a significant dropoff in attendance between their new stadium's inaugural game (a single game on Sunday night followed by a week or two on the road) in 2008. April and May usually have lower attendance on average because school is still in session and in some cities, the weather is simply not great for spending 3 hours outdoors at a game.

As for the expensive seats behind home plate, I'm sure a bean counter somewhere has figured out that the super expensive seats there are worthwhile, even if they are often empty or being used by people who are not necessarily real fans. Why would every team be putting those expensive seats there otherwise?

The problem is if they let Wrigley it'd have pissed off a ton of teams, never mind that there would be some ticket plan holders who would be shut out of ASG tickets. That's half of why Fenway didn't get one this year for its 100th; they have more STH and partial STH at that point than Fenway has seats even though a fair chunk are held by brokers.

Nationals Park, IIRC, was a victim of the CFR changes that took place during its construction. The seats behind home plate were made as fancy as they were in the hopes they'd be used as political gifts by corporations/lobbying firms. Making that illegal screwed up those seats.

On paper, Washington should be the next NL host (Minnesota all but has 2014 sewn up). However, the Miami press has several times whined about how they deserve it first, a byproduct of when they had the 2000 ASG taken from them when the franchise was unstable.

In theory, Cincinnati should next get priority given that they've had the longest wait and their part is (a year) older than Philly and San Diego.

Planning the next several years of ASGs will be hard to do because there are NINE that have never hosted an ASG, plus there are always historical and other considerations to factor in. Six are NL parks, but I doubt the new Yankee Stadium will be seeing an ASG anytime soon since the old stadium hosted the 2008 game.

I'm not sure the Yankees are doing any better. Supposedly at Nationals Park, many of the people who pay for those seats are spending lots of time in the club and not watching the game from their seats, so more of them are paid for than it would appear.

On paper, Washington should be the next NL host (Minnesota all but has 2014 sewn up).

Why? Don't the Nationals want to wait a bit longer and let the development in the Navy Yard area pick up before showing off their park?

To go "On-topic", wonder if The Train of Many Colors will make an appearance on All-Star day :)
