Its a vast improvement over the sewer formerly known as Shea Stadium. Citi Field is a little jewel, smaller and much nicer than Shea. You really can't get a bad seat at Citi Field. And, for railfans, the section sign numbers use the same font as the R series subway trains up to the R-42's! You know which ones I mean. |

Just to clarify, Shea's generic design is the main reason why the Mets had to build a new home. Almost all of the multipurpose stadiums that were around when Shea was here, are long, long, GONE. If the Jets were still playing there, Shea MIGHT have lasted longer, but they moved out, leaving the Mets as the only major tenant playing there. Sure, they had concerts, wrestling, soccer, and the Pope visiting amongst other things, but those are special events that occurred once in a while, not 7 1/2 months like in baseball. Shea looked like an architectural marvel when it first opened, but when the novelty wears off, it's often labeled a crumbling relic, or a dump. Smaller, cramped seats, and terrible upper deck sight lines made Shea look older than it really is. You can't fix the lack of foresight there by renovating. A new stadium was the ultimate solution. |
