True, but keep in mind that the lull in attendance is not limited to Citi Field. Look at the attendance figures for Marlins Park. Opening day was a sellout, and now that's gone down since then. Again, if the Mets stayed at Shea, they'd be worse off. A multipurpose stadium with only ONE team playing in the venue, especially in NYC, will sink you financially. Why else would the Yankees move into a new stadium of their own? Too many seats, not enough demand, means a loss of $$$$$. Obviously, the state of the economy is a factor as to why attendance is down. It's just too expensive for some folks to go to an MLB game these days. As for the empty seats behind home plate, do you get the feeling some of those people are not real fans to begin with? That's not to say that it is all the time, but who's gonna sit there if it costs too much to be down there anyway? I know I wouldn't. |
