Shea Stadium was an outdated multipurpose stadium, with FAR too many seats, than what was necessary to supply for the actual fans coming into the ballpark. Outside of opening day, you could see a lot of empty seats in the upper deck during the news ballgame highlights. The Mets needed a new ballpark, because they were losing money on unsold seats that no one was buying. Can't stay at Shea forever with that track record. Imagine if the Madoff fiasco occurred, while the Mets were still playing at Shea. It would have been an EVEN WORSE financial disaster for Fred Wilpon. Citi Field may be just another retread of classic ballparks, but it's a better park, business-wise. |
