When I was a sales rep for a circular/flyer distribution company, that McDonald's was my first account. We put out 10,000 flyers that day. The guy who owns that location also owns the one on Metropolitan in Forest Hills. And I'm sure they would like to sell the Shamrock Shake too. It was never a problem in the NY metropolitan area. But times have changed. McDonald's issued an official statement last year, stating that it would not be available in the NY area, so we'll see what happens this year. Here in Tampa, it's been out for a week. They usually come out with the shake during the last week of February, and stop selling it a week after St.Patricks Day. |

Besides what you stated, it'll probably have special taxes thereby making it be the only metro to lose money. There are stores that refuse to go into certain area's and city limits because the structure is ridiculous. I wouldn't be surprised if the internet pulled out of the area from the taxes on that. |

Because it is a 'local' promotion that is voted in by the Owner/Operators within a TV market, and the 5 Boro licensees did not support it because generally speaking, the city consumer does not buy it. Mary Steidl Director of Operations _________________________________________________________________ The above was McDonald's response last year to my e-mail asking why the Shamrock Shake was not available in the NY region. As you can see, she tries to blame the owners within the "TV market". Problem is, McDonald's does not appear to support the shake with a local or national tv ad campaign. I asked her if there was a tv spot for Shamrock Shake, and got no reply. She also says that "the city consumer" does not support it? Really? How would she know? Shamrock was off the menu for years, until it's recent comeback in Canada, Ireland, and every U.S. state, minus NY. In order to say "the city consumer" does support it, wouldn't it have to have been available in NY in the first place, to make that statement? Anyway, the Shake is now available on an international basis. In Florida, machines offer Shamrock, Vanilla, Chocolate, and Strawberry.(no blenders). I think the "5 Boro" licensees know what would happen if they put it on the menu. Everyone else in the 5 Boros would see it as an endorsement of one ethnic group while ignoring the many backgrounds that make up NY today. |

FYI, the McDonalds at Rockaway Parkway & Conkiln Avenue in Canarsie tested mustard on their burgers in the 80's, and it did not go over well with the customers. A friend of mine worked there at the time. Also, it reminds me of the Krystal chain down south. Krystal is like the "White Castle of the South", with the small burgers and all. Anyhow, at Krystal, if you order burgers there without specifying anything, they will come with mustard only, and absolutely no ketchup. I've learned over the years to order them with "ketchup only". :-) |

Hamburgers have always been served back to my days with ketchup, occasionally onions too. Big culture shock when the "California burgers" showed up with Bugger Kink with MAYONAISSE and lettuce added. Love it, but most of their burgers are good.Interestingly, when I drove up from Florida a few weeks ago, we stayed over night in North Carolina somewhere, and we ate at a Ruby Tuesday near the hotel (and had a burger). It was sort of interesting, as we ate at the bar, and you were still allowed to smoke at the bar.
