Shamrock Shake @ McDonald's

It's March. It's time for the Shamrock Shake at McDonald's. Unless, of course, you live in the New York Metropolitan area. Yup, once again the shake appears to be available in every region in the US and Canada, minus New York/New Jersey.

My theory is that McDonald's does this in the NY area because they know how New Yorkers think. "What, no shake for other backgrounds"? "Why is McDonald's not representing others on the menu"?

I e-mailed Mickey D's last year, and they danced around the topic, with some story about local owners voting against it, tv spots for the local NY market, and some other things that didn't add up.

Anyway, if anyone sees it up north, let me know where.

If it's a PC reason, it's a shame. Even the black cashier at the Wal-Mart was laughing at how silly it is to remove it for PC reasons.

Your response says that you do care, b/c you know how out-of-control political correctness is, and you feel that anyone not down with PC must be in the KKK or something.

People that think like me? If I see it here I'll let my kids order it and won't think anything of it. I'll also be taking advantage of the reduced price Filet O Fish Fridays.

But if they don't want it in NYC I don't really care. I doubt if it's a PC reason, but who knows? You're bound to be right sooner or later. ;)

It's mint flavored. Just a mint flavored shake that the McDonald's used to roll out for St Patrick's Day. They stopped for a while, then brought it back about two years ago, on an international basis, minus, you got it, NY/NJ.

In Florida, it's selling well. No shamrock on the sign. Nothing to ethnicize it.

And that's all it really is, green mint flavored syrup, powder, and milk. But it was great as a kid. And since it's offered for such a limited time, I went and had one tonight.

But in NY, it would bother so many people, so they leave it off the menu. That's how people from NY are.

LOL. I remember buying one at the Brodheadsville location last year. It's just so retarded that the NYC area isn't allowed to sell it, because NY is filled with race-minded people who keep racial scorecard of stuff like this, and would pressure McDonald's into removing it or adding shakes for other ethnic holidays too.

NY hosts the largest St. Patrick's Day parade in the country, but can't sell the shake. Meanwhile, you can buy one in Riverview, FL or Van Nuys, CA.

Nope ... did a little digging, and the problem has to do with two things in the NY Metro area. First off, the city's "food nutrition" regulations since there are trans-fats in the "ice milk" base for the particular shake. Second issue is the limited demand which takes one blender out of service and cuts into profits. FWIW, the Ancient Order of Hibernians has been after McDonald's to make the shake available all year. So there's yer "PC" ... heh.

Besides, any time I've ever felt like a shake, the damned shake machines were "broken" anyway since they'd just run the heaters and cleaned them and last thing any "lot and lobby" person wants to do is go through that AGAIN in a 24 hour period. :)

You're wrong. But it's no big deal.

First of all, the trans-fat laws apply to NYC proper, so it does not explain why Long Island, Westchester, and Northern NJ don't sell it.

Also, the trans-fat laws went into effect after McDonald's decision to not offer the Shamrock Shake in NY. So something has been stopping them from selling it all along.

Blender? Nope. It's just a bag with green syrup that attaches to a hose inside a machine. I even saw it myself at the Riverview, FL location tonight. And the manager told me it has been selling well all week. It has been profitable, which is why it's back on the menu.

Are you 100% sure the Shamrock Shake has trans fat and the other shakes don't? McDonald's offers nutrional charts to the public. We can find out for sure.

I think I have accurately explained why McDonald's didn't sell the Shamrock Shake in NY Metro last year. Maybe it's availabe this year. Let's see what some here say or see.

For ME, last time was late 60's at a Goody's joint (Bugger Kink "system") on Broadway between 230 and 231. But the wife did Mickey's in Zoo Paltz. I'm a firm believer that in order to properly get "rounded out" in life, one has to work (however briefly) in food service, transportation and retail. After that under your belt, you learn to stop bitching and be grateful for whatever happens next. =)

What can I say? I suspect the REAL reason the franchisees didn't want to do it was taking a valuable machine out of service to mix something that didn't sell as well as the other crap. When your margin is in pennies, you sit and figure out if there's enough of them. A single PENNY per sale means a lot in "fast food." But we got O'Grimace here. Heh.

It's the common sense of the local franchise owners of NY area McDonald's understanding their political environment.

If they sell the Shamrock Shake in NYC, someone will say, "Hey, how about a shake for the Puerto Rican Day Parade? The Gay Parade(Rainbow Shake)"? Someone will take out their racial scorecard in NY, and feel offended at McDonald's endorsement of an Irish holiday.

I'm not a mint fan, but confirmed that ALL of the local franchises here in NEW YORK have it ... your link says nothing about your claim that it's political correctness ... with the sales volumes involved in the NY Metro area, the cost of handling it probably isn't justified by the demand. And I'm sure some of the other folks here who work in "fast food" can confirm what I'm saying. Did you know that a single slice of cheese is a profit-killer? Or ONE bag of extra ketchup filched from the trays in the "self-serve" area?

Most of the NY Metro area McD's are owned by a small handful of franchisees ... they don't want the extra expense if the volume of sales ain't there, and apparently shakes in general ain't selling worth the effort. Did you READ the article you linked to thoroughly?

McDonald's knows the score. NY is like no other market. Very race/ethnic conscious people. I wouldn't sell the shake if I owned the location at Liberty and Lefferts, or Ditmars/Astoria Blvd.

The posts on the blogs prove that people want the shake in NY. Of course it would sell, just like it sells in Florida, PA, etc...... Sells everywhere! There's something going on behind the scenes in NY, home of the St. Patricks's Day Parade on Fifth Ave, but no Shamrock Shake.

Wasn't there a racial grievance to that too? Hispanics didn't like the chihuahua in the tv commercials? They felt it was racist. Yes.

I must say that you do think outside of the box. I do find it very offensive that the PATH system reminds its riders that drinking alcoholic beverages on March 17th is illegal. Talk about stereotyping.

Yes, they had to stop using the little dog in Taco Bell commercials because Hispanics thought it was racist. I forgot the reason they thought it was racist though.

If I was Irish, I would not be offended by that announcement, simply because St. Patricks Day is so commercialized, it encourages everyone to use it as an excuse to drink.

I'm not thinking outside the box. Shamrock Shake is available worldwide right now, minus NY Metro, and I know how people from NY are. Makes sense that the franchise owners in NY would vote it down.

As we know, we live in a society that encourage people to find reasons to be offended, when there's nothing behind it. This is a great example.

Maybe because it is on the route of the SI St. Patrick's Day parade?
