True but Dean didn't want to do it beyond the four year term. He can say mission accomplished and hand it over to Kaine.
I'm disappointed that he wasn't offered a Cabinet position, especially HHS. The cited reason is that he has too many enemies in DC, especially Emanuel and would have had a hard time moving universal health care because of that and his caustic style whereas Daschle is the opposite and also has many friends in both parties.

That's very true. I admire people like Dean in politics because they actually succeeded at something other than politics, and weren't trying to be president since they were in the womb.

whereas Daschle is the opposite and also has many friends in both parties.

They're southern Republicans. The fact that they are only "borderline" racists is a sign of progress.

It's the Republicans own fault. Their "southern strategy" got them into power in the 80's and 90's, but turned off many minority voters that might otherwise identify with Republican values.

Please, no hate-filled blogs. Especially not from the self-proclaimed "flagship of the Left".

Frankly, the comments are more interesting:

I knew that it wouldn't take long for liberal racism to rear it's ugly head.

Somehow liberals and leftists have adopted this bizarre rationalization that racism towards Black conservatives is acceptable because after all, "they are just Uncle Tom's"; isn't that right Nichols.

This is a great day for both conservatives and Americans in general. As Donna Brazile just noted in congratulations on CNN. She seems to have a different view; calling Steele a great man and a wonderful new leader for the Republicans

It's a shame that the Nation despises racism except when they are conservative. I'm sure Nichols will find ample backup here from other racists on the left who will be even more vitriolic towards Steele than Nichols.

You sure about that? Consider when he announced his retirement!

IIRC he said that he wasn't interested in a second term from Day 1 of his reign at the DNC.

Of course when you think of it, it couldn't be any other way. Had he failed he would have been booted out anyway. Had he succeeded (which he did), there would be a new Democratic leadership in charge of Congress and/or the WH who will want their own people at the DNC. He made both things happen in consecutive cycles.

Steele finds himself in the same position that Dean did in early 2005. However since he is much more affable then Dean, I wouldn't exclude him being on the GOP ticket in 2012.

Sorry, but Steele ran with Bob Ehrlich as the candidate for Lt. Governor when Ehrlich was running for Governor.

Therefore, Steele was elected to a Maryland Office. He and Ehrlich ran for re-election against Martin O'Malley and lost big time.

Both Republicans who were elected to the Office of Governor since 1960 were one-term Governors who were succeeded by a Democrat.

Interestingly enough, the situation where the "Lieutenant Governor or Vice President is from a different party as the 'boss'" is PRECISELY what happened here in Arizona when Governor Napolitano took the position as Secretary of the DHS. In Arizona, the Governor and Secretary of State (Lieutenant Governor) are elected separately. Napolitano is a Democrat, and Brewer the new governor is a Republican. This situation may have killed Napolitano's chances of ever getting elected to office in Arizona ever again as most Arizona Democrats are bitter at her for leaving the state while it was in the midst of a massive budget crisis.

So who is the RNC's "base"?

Both parties have a voter base. These are the people who can be counted on to support their party's candidates without much risk of defection. The key to electoral success is capturing voters outside the party's base.

The main bases for each party, with some overlap between categories are:

Democrats -

Minorities
Single women
SWPL's*
Jews
Academics
Public employee union members

Republicans -

Married men
Evangelical/fundamentalist Protestants
Mormons
Small "L" libertarians
Affluent business and professional people

* = people with many of the Stuff White People Like characteristics.
