Seat belt laws save taxpayers and insured motorists millions of dollars per year.

The solution is to not spend government money on people injured while not wearing seatbelts and allowing insurance companies to charge higher premiums for non-seatbelt wearers not to pass laws restricting freedom.

I really don't know. My point is that trans fats (or whatever it is the city is banning) are only used because they're cheaper, not because they taste better. I don't care about the health issues because good food is about moderation.

Optimally they should have had a law mandating information (a notification about trans fats on the menu) instead of an outright ban. People could then know where trans fats are used and where they aren't and make up their own minds instead of Bloomberg making it up for them.

I'm talking from a flavor perspective. Trans fat is merely a cheap substitute for better tasting products, like (for me) olive oil or animal fats like butter, lard, or schmalz. All fat carries its set of risks which are minimized by eating them in moderation, something we tend to forget. I don't use hydrogenated oil either. I use extra virgin olive oil for probably 95% of what I cook. It tastes better than other vegetable based oils. It also has a smoke point of around 350 deg so it's suitable for any cooking, including deep frying, if one is so inclined. And yes, pony up the extra dinero for extra virgin as it is markedly better tasting than the regular stuff. I hate to sound like an ad but I can't say enough good about the stuff.

Fred

Helmet laws, OTOH actually INCREASES motorcycle accidents, since riders forced to wear them feel safer and so they take risks on the road a cautious helmet-less rider would never take.

If true, that would just be proof that on average motorcycle riders are morons.

Are you sure this isn't one of those items about helmet laws increasing neck injuries? The people who used to die now get serious neck injuries in large numbers, not because they are wearing a helmet, but because the helmet shielded them from the massive head injuries that would make the neck injuries unnoticed.

Ignorant nonsense.

There are riders who complain that the full helnet which covers the ears and side of head and jaw reduces situational awareness by limiting field of view to either side as well as hearing, but crash statistics and results of accident investigations jhave not supported these concerns.

Agreed.

The most popular burgers today are real simple:

1. A LOT of MEAT. Half pound or more
2. A LOT of CHEESE (At least two slices, and probably more like 4 slices
3. Bacon
4. Lettuce, tomato.

The Monster Thickburger at Hardees is an example. These new burgers make The Big Mac, at 650 calories and, what, 30 grams of fat (mostly saturated fat), looks like a celery snack by comparison.

State meddling in the lives of its people "for their own good".
State thinking they know what's best for the people without their input.
A single political party holding sway over an entire to the point that the other party just doesn't compete.
Key political races having no opposition.
The removal of rights.
Mass imprisonment, often for infractions that do not warrent imprisonment.
A head of state who does what is good for THEM, not their country, and entered office by dubious means.
A small powerful class alongside a large (and increasing) powerless majority.

All of this is in America today, and all of this sounds a lot like communism. Sadly, the best part (mistreatment of criminals) isn't in play, thank you 8th Amendment for not letting us wail on rapists.

Before the invention of the "double quarter pounder" I used to make my own by buying two quarter pounders and putting them together - throwing away the top bun of one and the bottom bun of the other. If they ever ban double or triple burgers I will be forced to do it again.

There is something about the McDs or BurgerKing burgers that is so good. I hate the taste of home-cooked hamburger or cheeseburger.
