That bad boy jumped big time. In the 4 years I owned it, Got speeding tickets on the Prospect Expy, Clearview & on the eastbound Belt doing 95 betw Pennsylvania Ave & Cross Bay Blvd. That was a sweet stretch of hwy. w/o trucks. Not much of anybody else especially at 2 AM!...except the man!

But back when, I drove a 3-speed manual with the shifter on the steering column. That was a real pain if you had to stop on a steep hill.

I had a '61 Buick Special Automatic that I traded for a '59 Bug when I was in US Army posted at Ft. Sill. It was a 4 on the floor. In the Army drove a shit load of both automatics and manuals. My favorite was the 3/4 quarter ton straight 6-cylinder 4 speed truck. It wasn't fast but could go almost anywhere. Once separated from the army I had a string of VW's 4 speeds starting with a Karmin Chia until the Diesels VWs with 4's and 5's manuals. Always better mileage!!

That depends on the location of the parking brake. The technique is to hold the car with the parking brake. Then you can start by placing the car in 1st and simultaneously easing up on the clutch, easing onto the accelerator and releasing the parking brake. This technique keeps both feet free for acceleration. I'm still not shiftless.

If you ease up on the clutch while releasing the accelerator perfectly you'll never roll back. Just need some practice.

No controls at all, the front seat was facing toward the rear seat. (sort of like the Wonder Wheel) It had it's right directional lights on and then made a right at the intersection. It just looked really weird.

I drove it to JFK every workday, first on Atlantic Ave from where I lived in Clinton Hill til 92, then on the BQE/LIE/Van Wyck when I lived in Williamsburg. The traffic on the Van Wyck northbound was basically run in 2nd gear, using the clutch to engage/disengage to keep up with the slow moving traffic. My left leg got a work out. I also made sure the column shift mechanism was in good shape with new bushings every few years, but it did get temporarily stuck between 1st and 2nd every once in while. The 3 speed transmission in this car was the last year with no synchro 1st and reverse, so I tried to use that only from a dead stop or close to it to keep from grinding it. I put 150K miles on it, sold it with 215K. One engine rebuild at 125K due oil consumption. Tiny manual drum brakes and becoming more and overall more fragile made me replace it with a 98 Lumina LTZ (basically a police spec with fancy rims). I miss the Impala, but not dealing with the NYC traffic with such old technology. I was young.

It also didn't let you downshift into first gear. Awful for stop and go traffic as well as for a steepening hill.

Most of knowledge goes back to VWs. The first gear synchro was introduced in 1961. It seemed like VW was far behind the times in that regard. But I suppose not now with this information.

The Type 1 bus finally got all synchro's a few years later. The VW enthusiast's site says the old crashbox transmissions continued to be made for non-US market budget priced VW's for a number of years after that (cheaper to build). Some Chrysler products and AMC Hornets and Gremlins had non-synchro 1st gears in 3 speeds until the 70's.

The clutch pedal got a lot easier to push down over the years. There's something called a centrifugal clutch. The clutch plate has weights along radii in a circular pattern. They are pushed towards the enter by springs. As the clutch rotates faster because the car is moving faster, the weights move outward. This increases its moment of inertia, making it more difficult to move it - i.e. more difficult to push down on the pedal. OTOH, when the engine is idling or the accelerator is released, weights are pushed inward by the springs and the moment of inertia is a lot less. This makes it easier to push down on the pedal. It's been around since at least the 1950's. My '54 Ford had one.

It wasn't so much as clutch pedal resistance, it was the repetition that got to me over the space of an hour plus. My '68 Cougar had a "heavy" clutch.
