The very early VW Type 1's up to 1952 and Kubelwagens didn't have syncro's in any gear, requiring double clutching just for regular up and downshifting. The Type 1 bus finally got all synchro's a few years later. The VW enthusiast's site says the old crashbox transmissions continued to be made for non-US market budget priced VW's for a number of years after that (cheaper to build). Some Chrysler products and AMC Hornets and Gremlins had non-synchro 1st gears in 3 speeds until the 70's. |
