I practiced on my father's '49 Chevy backing in and out of the garage.
I had a '61 Buick Special Automatic that I traded for a '59 Bug when I was in US Army posted at Ft. Sill. It was a 4 on the floor.
In the Army drove a shit load of both automatics and manuals. My favorite was the 3/4 quarter ton straight 6-cylinder 4 speed truck.
It wasn't fast but could go almost anywhere.

Once separated from the army I had a string of VW's 4 speeds starting with a Karmin Chia until the Diesels VWs with 4's and 5's manuals.

Always better mileage!!
