I have a friend in the Albany area. (She is of color). We've been close for 24 years. She worked for the same state agency for 30 years, that selkirk worked for. She owns a home and is very middle class. She felt a sense of pride when Barack Obama was elected and was upset that I didn't share her joy.. She feels that pride over the recognition of "her" history but she is not the lazy black person that you allude to. |

But it did only free slaves held in Confederate states. There were a couple of slave states in the Union, and slaves there were not freed by the Emancipation Proclamation. And of course, as a practical matter, people held as slaves in the Confederacy weren't actually freed until the Union took control of the area where they were, which is what famously happened on that June 19th. |

The emancipation proclamation stated that every slave in the confederacy would be free when they were on Union territory, whether it be by them escaping or by the union army occupying that territory. It redefined the Civil War from solely protecting the union to being a fight to end slavery. This was important because it kept Britain and France, who opposed slavery, from actively assisting the confederacy.I didn’t see anything about a stipulation that a Slave had to fight alongside the union troops in order to be free. I did see that the emancipation proclamation allowed black Americans to fight in the union army. Since Texas was the last place to cave to the union armies and the last place to ratify the 13th amendment, it’s fitting that Juneteenth celebrate the events there as the final straw in ending slavery. |

Before there were police departments there were paid private watchmen. Early fire brigades were private and paid by insurance companies. Once they realized that a fire could spread from an uninsured building to an insured building, that model gave way to municipal fire departments |

Still, your assertion that certain municipal services being funded by the government makes them socialism, is sophomoric at best. Those alleged "socialist" services only exist to support a capitalist society and capitalist engine. Political leaders promote social policy only to support capitalist ends. The claim that municipal police & fire prove that this nation is socialist are just the result of ranting memes embracing progressive thought. |

The word "Juneteenth" very much follows the English language tradition of combining words. If you found out that "Juneteenth" was actually a word that was coined by the British 200 years ago you would have a completely different opinion. You've said as much about similar words. You have a "black problem", not a "word problem". |

On the contrary, those municipal entities are driven by capitalism. If you doubt that then explain why the 2nd avenue subway, begun in 1949, has yet to reach 125th st. While the East Side Access, the electrification of the Ronkonkoma branch and the 3rd main line track have gotten done in less than 10 years. Because bringing people to midtown serves corporate interests while subway to 125th st serves the proles. |

There are volumes written on that very subject. You might want to check one or two of them out when you have time. It seems that the ONLY purpose here to push forward that leftwing meme is because those of your ilk try to defend and justify the failed policies of the left. The fact that welfare has been a dismal failure because it only encourages more dependencey does not make my former employment, socialist. That is just a convenient rationalization. |
