I can’t believe a car built in America After 1935 didn’t have a synchronizer for first gear.
I don’t think you’re making it up but that’s silly.

1967 - some kind of Chrysler, I forget what brand.

I tried shifting from second to first while moving often enough before my brain finally accepted that it just couldn't be done. Maybe it was doable with just the perfect combination of gas and clutch, but it sure wasn't straightforward, or anything I could figure out. You could go really slow in second though, which made it less bad.

What I really hated (this was a Chrysler of some kind) is that you couldn't shift into first gear when moving.

You had to double clutch to downshift without synchromesh.

Chryslers through the early 1950's did not have synchromesh in first.

Over the years when stick shift cars were carjacked, the scumbag would get one block away,

I owned a Peugeot 403 for many years. That car had 4 speeds on the column with no shift diagram. All the controls were labeled in French. I could leave that car running and be sure it would be waiting for me, when I returned. It was always amusing to see how it would come back from valet parking. It had a manual soufficateur, marked "S", that fooled most valets.

IIRC, you could downshift from any gear to first from 15mph or under if you double clutched. Thats when you step on the clutch, shift to neutral, let up on the clutch, then depress it again & shift to first. If you did this over 15mph, you'd hear crunching and mashing of gears.
Not good.

Nope. Horrible grinding noises resulted.

I'm sure Stephen is right that the appropriate double clutching technique would have allowed it, but the ordinary gear shifting technique did not.

They still make 'em although it's rare for them to be at the dealers without ordering it and waiting. In 2012 I was looking to buy a Jeep Wrangler with a stick (which I ended up buying). At Town and Country Chrysler Jeep in Levittown I went for a test drive and the salesman said I have to do all the driving as he didn't know how to drive a stick. As if I was going to test drive without driving, LOL!!
I ended up buying a Manual Tranny Wrangler with 6 speeds which I still have.

I was riding on a Harley on Ocean Pkway between Captree and Jones Beach when my clutch cable snapped and I was stuck in second gear. Luckily I was in second as if I was in fourth or fifth I could never start moving if I stopped. I rode it all the way to the Harley dealer in Hempstead in 2nd gear all the way with my hazard lights on.

I believe you, but I don't understand how that works.

If your foot is all the way down on the clutch and you're moving at a slow speed like 5 mph, your transmission is disengaged. How does your clutch know whether you were previously in neutral or in 2nd as you try to shift to first?

I believe you, but I don't understand how that works.

There are 2 gears that have to mesh. The driving gear off the engine and the driven gears connected to the wheels. The clutch is between the engine and the driving gear.

The problem without synchromesh is that the gears must be moving a close to the same speed to engage without grinding (and losing metal).

For a given wheel speed, a lower driven gear will be turning faster than the higher driven gear. That's toothwise.

Now you are down shifting. The driving gear is going too slow to mesh with the faster moving lower driven gear.

Step on the clutch and shift from the higher gear into neutral. Now pop the clutch. The engine is turning the driving gear but the driving gear is not connected to any driven gear. Gently step on the accelerator to speed up the driving gear so it's close to the speed of the faster moving lower driven gear you want to engage.

Step on the clutch a second time and shift into that lower gear without grinding the gears.

The same problem exists in reverse, when upshifting. However, you want to slow down the driving gear. However, the driving gear will usually slow down when the clutch is engaged. This slowing is usually sufficient so that double clutching isn't required when upshifting.

The bottom line is this: If the police want to pull you over, you get pulled over, period, tree on the mirror or not. When cross questioned as to why, the standard answer is that they thought the driver was weaving when he/she wasn't.
This, as "unscruplous" (unfair?) as this may seem, its done more often than you think. The silver lining to this "enforcement" is it catches many DWI offenders that normally wouldn't be caught.
Since most folks who drink and drive never get caught, this pull over the "weaver", especially if its 2 in the morning & a group of kids are riding, this profiling is quite common, especially in eastern LI. in the summertime. Traffic violation $$$ is written into those township's budgets.

It does not help fight DUI. It's fishing 101 hoping to find drugs or a warrant. Notice how the air freshener tactic is against men. You almost never see it on women.

But I'd say cops have reduced interactions by 30% since George Floyd.

While driving to my model train club, this evening, I did an impromptu survey. 2/3 of the cars I looked at had something hanging from the rear view mirror, Including

Handicapped Parking permits
Crucifixes
Air Fresheners
CD's
Dream catcher
fuzzy stuff
Ring of keys
Other miscellaneous stuff

Obviously, that law is not enforced on Long Island but then again, neither is speeding on the LI parkways since Lord Cuomo moved the state police to the bridges and tunnels.

Sure its "fishing" and its done all the time. On good days, It catches all of the above. Sometimes big ones. Eastern LI (Hamptons-Montauk) reel in thousands of $$$ from seasonal summertime DWI busts. Tune in WLNG.com. sometime. Its a radio station out of Sag Harbor that reads off the east end DWI busts with certain daily newscasts during the summer season.
