Yes, graffiti is back. The elements of society, namely SJW's, see it as a non-violent crime and want to legalize it like marijuana.

You are a 60+ year old virgin.

Others here have not had sex in years.

Have you seen Lance Wright IRT New Lots video? He covers that line well.

It’s a sad state of affairs if that is true.
They should offer their homes as a free canvas if they truly feel that way.

I know a NYCT supervisor who always used to refer to it as "beautiful murals". She is the first person I heard it from.

But back in the 80's it was already defended as art in the movie Beat Street.

Some people actually want to return NYC to the ‘80s, with the porn palaces and hookers in Times Square, the filthy subways - they say NYC had character back then, before it became “Disneyfied” - ie, a safe place to raise a family...

I very much doubt that the people who complain that Times Square is "disneyfied" want a return of porn palaces, hookers, and filthy subways.

But there could be some real nuts out there. Feel free to provide quotes if you actually see anything different.

That was Koch's mindset. "Character" wasn't the word used then. It was the "feel" or grittiness that was used to be thought of as the tourist magnet back then. When Guiliani came to town, Times Sq was soon relabeled "Disneyland East"

It’s better now. The old way is fun to read about but a nightmare to live through. People ignore the massive crime and the fact that tourists and consumers of the local businesses were frequent victims of that crime.

Also, a lot of the business there was either killed by the internet, or was and is dangerous and illegal.

I agree. Back then I can see a Gomer Pile type tourist walking down 42nd St going "golllleyyyy" while getting fleeced by 3 card monte players & "come-ons from the whores on Seventh Ave" as Paul Simon noted.(from "The Boxer")
As for the businesses' there, Its generally conceded that most of those adult "scumatoriums" were mafia controlled. When Guiliani took over, his reputation for being a crime fighter & and RICO act activist plus having a hard on for mafia types that gave Italians a bad name, that gave him more incentive to clean up that snake pit.

New York was never as bad as its reputation. I drove a medallion cab off and on throughout the 70's, railfanned the subways, walked the streets and never got mugged. A lot of the reputation was perpetrated be Johnny Carson's monologues. Movies like the Out of Towners didn't help. That doesn't mean you could walk through Central Park at midnight though.

I didn’t think it was as bad as it was exaggerated, but crime was higher, so there were more places to avoid. Like I’m pretty sure it was just as safe to walk along Fifth Avenue during the day. Maybe even safer because if someone shot you on Fifth Avenue, back then the shooter would lose support.

But the thing is, the pre-1990 NYC also had the large working-class and poor areas , which gave NYC it's character. Now, all those people are priced out for the most part. The projects will be the last holdout.

The only place I have ever been the victim of an in-person crime in NYC is actually 10th Street at 5th Ave. Admittedly, it was 10 PM, not daylight.

Circa 1969 I walked from PABT to the BMT subway, using 41st street. I was probably relatively safe because I didn't look rich or like a totally easy target. But the entire block from 8th to 7th was full of loitering young men who didn't look like they'd ever worked a regular job. It was very unsettling.

A guy blocked my path and said, I have a gun, give me your wallet. I did, he took out the $8 in it and gave the wallet back to me, and ran off. That was about 1970, so $8 was sort of real money back then.

I'm a little later, and it was afternoon. I had an "altercation" on the M train in 1988 between Essex St and Hewes (yes, it was over by Hewes, marcy was still at the tail end). It ended okay, and I dont care to discuss it more that that...but it was a learning experience too. I was very young, and learned not to trust anyone.
In the end, I was lucky....I was not hurt, and wasn't robbed, but it was only a few weeks into me riding the subway in that horrible nyc era alone, and it taught me well.
It took me a few trips through there afterwards to feel secure again, but it is what is is....
And I also know that it is what it is. I'd never like to see nyc return to that time again , but there are certain politicians hell bent on it.

In the early-mid 70s I walked from Penn Sta to GCT. Walking sorta zig-zag from the 2 points, I found myself walking along 42 St by Bryant Park. At That time, it was boarded up & every conceivable skell was around there. I just took big steps, no eye contact & kept close to the curb & nothing happened. Never went by their again until the park was re-opened.

Regardless of what went on in Times Sq. & the filthy subways, there were always safe places to raise a family in NYC. I raised my kids in their early years in Woodhaven. That was a safe working class neighborhood back in the early-mid 80s.
