New York was never as bad as its reputation. I drove a medallion cab off and on throughout the 70's, railfanned the subways, walked the streets and never got mugged. A lot of the reputation was perpetrated be Johnny Carson's monologues. Movies like the Out of Towners didn't help. That doesn't mean you could walk through Central Park at midnight though. |
