That's NOT how policing works! You can't compare how certain cops at a job you were on handle a situation to everyone else. Shit, *I* even know of someone who would have been 100% justified in shooting a kid WHO WAS POINTING A FIREARM AT HIM, but didn't because he assessed the situation, and realized that the kid was just scared, frozen in fear, until his friend "snapped him out of it". Because this one guy utilized firearm control, doesn't mean that it's prudent or applicable for other situations, thus proving that one size does NOT fit all when it comes to police work.

She was acting as a police officer during the Jean incident. In fact, one of the reasons DPD terminated her was failure to follow established police procedure.

This whole sub-thread is from 1950 and a waste of time.

These European cesspools have things called "no-go" zones for the police, and when they enter the cars go up in flames and people throw grenades at police stations.

You know how many cars go up in flames on a typical weekend in pre-plague France? How many cars go up in flames on a weekend in LA?

Give me break.

The UK would be the obvious example. The typical British "Bobby" (named for Sir Robert Peel, who originated the whole concept of a Police Force as we know it today) does not carry a gun. They do have armed police who are called on when needed, but they are referred to specifically as "armed police", to distinguish them from the more common variety who are not armed with firearms.

The real problem is with police culture, as explained clearly in this video. We need to completely overhaul police training and police culture, starting with a recruit's first day at the academy. There should be an "honor code" like the ones at our military academies: the cadets "do not lie, cheat, or steal, or tolerate those who do." And that honor code must carry over to their service in the field. Instead, we have a situation where police "do not tolerate" those who refuse to lie and cheat in the defense of their "brothers". That's why police departments have to be rebuilt from the bottom up, with the new departments perhaps given different names to distinguish them from the old ones.

I also think that they should be forced to carry insurance. And yes, it should be partially paid for by the union, so that the unions will want to fire "expensive" cops.

This is how capitalism solves problems. It works.

I agree completely. The "blue wall of silence/punish the rats" corporate culture of policing needs to be abolished. Honorable behavior codes, like those you described at West Point, should be instituted instead.

Again, nobody really knows how many people were wrongfully arrested, jailed or killed before the advent of widespread, publicly accessible bystander video, because whatever version of events the police created, was automatically assumed to be the truth. This atmosphere encouraged massive dishonesty, lying, and almost absolute power to inflict injury and death without consequences. In court, there's even a name among cops for their perjury: "testilying".

Just look at the attitude of some of the posters here, that hold themselves out as current or former police officers. When they tell you that they meted our such street-level punishments as "turban parties", etc. ("How many cops does it take to push a perp down the stairs? None, he tripped and fell"), believe them. Video is starting to confirm these stories, and hopefully, is also acting as a catalyst for real, lasting changes in the way we allow our police to perform their jobs.

It does look as if her chin lightly touched his shoulder, about 1/2 to 2/3 of a second before he strikes her. But that is certainly no justification for the massive force with which he strikes her.

You. I thank God you are no longer on the force. But I wonder how many who think the way you do are.

Question: If a person does not physically strike an officer, but merely insults the officer verbally (as was the case with the incident discussed in the video I linked to), would you still think that meting out physical "justice" would be OK? Remember, in this country, such insults are speech protected by the First Amendment.

You haven't answered my question: do you think verbally insulting police merits/justifies physical "punishment"? You seem to be saying you wouldn't do it, but if you knew a fellow officer had, would you say so if asked about it, or lie to cover it up?
