The typical British "Bobby" (named for Sir Robert Peel, who originated the whole concept of a Police Force as we know it today) does not carry a gun. They do have armed police who are called on when needed, but they are referred to specifically as "armed police", to distinguish them from the more common variety who are not armed with firearms. |
