Even if not required by the Constitution, he had enough members of his caucus who were vulnerable in 2020 elections which would have been definite flips in 2020 as opposed to toss-up/lean Republican. His whip count probably told him enough would defect if there was no trial such that a majority (though not 2/3) would have found Trump guilty. That would also make it harder to claim that it was a partisan “witch hunt.” Do I believe something took place, yes, but I believe that there were overt partisans who tried to shoehorn a crime that the conduct didn’t meet all of the requirements for. |

A Dem analog would be Adam Schiff. I respect his skill in completely hoodwinking the media and their viewers into believing bullshit for years. Schiff successfully tied Trump's hands for 3 years with investigations that went nowhere, closing off avenues of 'draining the swamp' (or even basic administration changes) due to the perception of obstruction. Both these people are terrible for democracy, yet will likely be re-elected in their districts because they are effective at shutting down the opposing party. |

You forgot that Kentucky now has Democratic governor.Realigned the party for Republicans to lose many state and local in 2017 and 2019, losing half the legislative seats they picked up during the 8 Obama years, and for them to lose the House in 2018 - all repudiations of Trump. Dems won 58% of the popular vote for House races in 2018,the largest since 1974. So much for telling the Dems to "fuck off". The trouble with Republicans is that they live in their glory days of 2016, and have their heads stuck in the sand ever since. |

Kentucky's former governor was the least popular in the country and only lost by 5k votes. Note that was the only election in 2019 that went D out of the positions up for grabs:The AG won by 175k votes (first black Republican state AG in the US). The agriculture commissioner won by 275k votes. The state auditor won by 200k votes. The secretary of state won by 130k votes. The treasurer won by 300k votes. The most important thing to realize is that all the vote totals were roughly equal. This gives the indication that for the most part people voted (R) down the line but flipped (D) specifically for the Governor. |

No enthusiasm means if there's so much as a drizzle on election day, or anything remotely inconvenient to getting there (road work, bad bus schedule, etc) people won't bother. Trump supporters will stand in line outside for 12 hours for the *chance* to get into a rally. This is why the Dems desperately need national mail-in voting, if there isn't, they will lose.

However the state supreme court election was on Democrat primary day, the last one where Bernie still had a chance in hell, so there were plenty of Dems there. Conversely, there was no compelling reason for Republicans to show up.The Dems retook the house in 2018 because Trump was not on the ballot. There was no draw for Trump supporters to go to the polls. Also, it was in the midst of Russiagate and Republicans didn't want to allow a potential puppet of Putin to have unchecked power. As the conspiracy theories were debunked, his support within the party has risen substantially, and the remaining 10% of Republicans who don't support Trump write columns for WaPo or are CNN/MSNBC contributors. |
