Even if not required by the Constitution, he had enough members of his caucus who were vulnerable in 2020 elections which would have been definite flips in 2020 as opposed to toss-up/lean Republican. His whip count probably told him enough would defect if there was no trial such that a majority (though not 2/3) would have found Trump guilty. That would also make it harder to claim that it was a partisan “witch hunt.” Do I believe something took place, yes, but I believe that there were overt partisans who tried to shoehorn a crime that the conduct didn’t meet all of the requirements for. |
