Also regarding income inequality - the way we approach raises guarantees it.
Picture two employees performing different jobs at the same company. Employee A earns 50k, Employee B earns 100k. The company announces a 2% cost of living raise for all staff. Now, Employee A earns 51k and B earns 102k. The income gap between A and B also increased by 2%! This can be solved if, for example, you average the employee salaries together, take 2% of that average, and issue that as a flat raise. The company is spending the exact same additional amount of money either way, but the income gap has not increased.

The top 1% pay 39% of the taxes while only receiving 20% of the income, best not to piss them off.

The benefit to the economy of the top 1% or 0.1% income earners should be measured by their share of tax revenue. It should be measured by their contribution to the GDP - the amount of goods and services purchased.

Look at what happens when we try to copy European style high speed rail.

Europe is more densely populated, giving rise to a bigger customer base per mile of track, and the density is urban. So the area between big cities, where much of the money for HSR needs to be spent, is actually often less dense than in the US. Europe doesn't have as many Stamfords, Norwalks, San Fernando Valleys, etc.

what the fuck does density have to do with how much I need to get to the next city over?
Doesn't matter if I am in a condo or a 5 bedroom house, I still gotta go.

Does density matter for airports?

Sigh.

The ROW cost of HSR is pretty much the same, whether it is used by a million passengers a year or 10 million.

And yes, density matters for airports too. How many places to you think you can fly to directly from Utica, NY, as compared to LGA?

That huge, incorrect assumption about how raises work. You're assuming that everybody gets the same increases, which is not what happened. Hence the reason why the top 1% saw a 157% increase, whereas the lowest 10% saw a 4.1% increase in real income.

Income inequality is not meaningless just because there's a little narrowing in the gap. Living costs have far outstripped all those increases the lower and middle classes have gotten, and they're fed up with it.

As for environmental regulation, it was already insufficient. Plus every time a Democratic president added regulations, a Republican president would roll them back, resulting in net zero progress at best. Greta Thunberg is merely giving voice to the frustration towards that lack of progress and is an example of why I said how extremists are getting more popular.

That pretty much proves my point though. What works somewhere else doesn't always work here, for reasons that aren't immediately obvious.

Though to counter your point about dense vs sparse: it's easier to establish a high speed ROW through sparse areas than urban ones, so if anything it should be cheaper to construct. Texas and CAHSR both fit this bill, and the private vs public debate will be settled when we see which (if either of these projects) takes the first paying customer between its endpoint cities.

The I-5 corridor along the west side of the Central Valley in CA is tolerably empty for many miles. The trouble of course is the endless suburbs and the mountains.

But it’s still occupied for an inconvenient distance towards the cities. In Europe, HSR lines eventually merge with conventional rail lines to enter a city. Increase the distance that HSR has to merge with conventional rail lines and it defeats much of the purpose.

Yes, that's what I mean by CA cities having endless suburbs.

Downtown LA to Victorville is a long way. And the route north out of LA on I-5 has even worse mountains and no rail line.

Of course, they could also build a San Gabriel Base Tunnel to solve that problem.

This wouldn’t be the same as though, as the Central Valley is still at a notably higher elevation than the LA basin, so such a tunnel would have a continuous incline, and it would still open into already developed Palmdale.

It would cost billions, so better to spend that on tanks and aircraft carriers.

Yes, the right answer for HSR is a San Gabriel Base Tunnel. But that would be part of what makes HSR in CA expensive. And you also have to pay to run the line through the San Fernando Valley.

And western Europe where HSR is prevalent doesn't have those types of mountains.

Food for thought, yesterday, 02/18/2020 while driving in my 2005 VW, I was tuned to 1010 WINS, the all news station.

They reported that Chinatown was seeing a 70-& drop off in business since the Corona Virus flare up world wide.

The reporter said there was nothing to be concerned about, and New Yorker's should return to Chinatown and support their neighbors.

Hmmm, I wonder, is the drop off warranted?

Why should such a presentation be classified

Because the US intelligence agencies, despite all attempts by Trump to ruin them, still have sources they don't want the Chinese to know about. If the information were not classified, the Chinese would be able to figure out where the US got the info from, and heads would roll.

Same reason why a US president would never tell a foreign head of state just what ISIS was planning in Syria. Oh, wait.
