The current extremism is the political system responding to people who vote on party lines and the unwillingness of the electorate to "waste a vote" on a third party.People who always vote the same party, their vote and interests do not matter. The other party will be unable to recruit them, and their own party is already counting their votes in the bag. They are baseline, irrelevant. Therefore the people who need to be recruited to get enough votes are the independents and the extremes. Independents tend to be highly educated and discerning with their votes, and are a hard vote to win. Extremists are dummies whose votes can be bought by disingenuously pandering to their individual extremes. Since extreme votes are the easier of the two to get, and all votes are equal regardless of the intelligence/education/knowledge of the candidates of the person casting them, he that panders to the most extremes wins the game. |

I look at slates and political parties as a normal company and a duopoly. One has healthy competition which forces everyone involve you be innovative and the consumer has many more choices. The duopoly offers very little choices and allows for things such as gerrymandering forces and generally have too much influence. |

The 3rd and 4th parties in Maine remain minor items.The DUP in the UK currently wields a phenomenal amount of power, even though it didn't elect the PM. There is no way the 3rd and 4th parties in Maine could wield that kind of power in Maine. And third parties in Israel have a tremendous effect on who becomes PM, and also on policy. |

If not, their mainstream party of choice still gets their vote.Currently, 3rd parties split the vote with the next closest ideologically mainstream one, causing the odd scenario where multiple similar candidates (which would happen on the more popular side) will steal votes from each other resulting in the less popular but more united opposite ideology winning. Think of it like Fox News. It's the most watched news network because it's the only conservative network, while there's varying degrees of liberal networks each taking their own slice of the pie. Thus their biggest use is to register a statistic for "I cared enough to show up and vote, but neither of you mainstream candidates are worth the ink on the ballot paper". |

But I'm just saying it didn't give the third parties in Maine any real power. The DUP in the UK with its measly 10 MPs have vastly more power in the UK than the independent parties in Maine have relative to Maine. The most radical choice for the House that is allowed under the Constitution (I'm believing SP's representation that this is allowed) is for each state to apportion its House seats among parties in proportion to the votes for those parties. That would allow the Communist Party to get a seat or two from CA and NY and the Racist Party to get the same from MS and AL. Hey, even the Libertarians would get some seats. I think we know why that isn't going to happen soon. |
