The idea is people make their first choice the 3rd party/Independent. The 2nd choice is the mainstream party. If by some miracle the 3rd party wins, they get the representative they want. If not, their mainstream party of choice still gets their vote.Yes, and it's exactly what happened in the Maine congressional election, and it's good. But I'm just saying it didn't give the third parties in Maine any real power. The DUP in the UK with its measly 10 MPs have vastly more power in the UK than the independent parties in Maine have relative to Maine. The most radical choice for the House that is allowed under the Constitution (I'm believing SP's representation that this is allowed) is for each state to apportion its House seats among parties in proportion to the votes for those parties. That would allow the Communist Party to get a seat or two from CA and NY and the Racist Party to get the same from MS and AL. Hey, even the Libertarians would get some seats. I think we know why that isn't going to happen soon. |
