The idea is people make their first choice the 3rd party/Independent. The 2nd choice is the mainstream party. If by some miracle the 3rd party wins, they get the representative they want. If not, their mainstream party of choice still gets their vote.Currently, 3rd parties split the vote with the next closest ideologically mainstream one, causing the odd scenario where multiple similar candidates (which would happen on the more popular side) will steal votes from each other resulting in the less popular but more united opposite ideology winning. Think of it like Fox News. It's the most watched news network because it's the only conservative network, while there's varying degrees of liberal networks each taking their own slice of the pie. Thus their biggest use is to register a statistic for "I cared enough to show up and vote, but neither of you mainstream candidates are worth the ink on the ballot paper". |
