Correct. According to the Times, the NY Senate has refused to move the state offices primary to June because they are still in session in June and don't want to have to campaign while in session.

    It was a law suit.

Maybe the feds only sued NY. Possibly other aspects of the NY system are less streamlined than the MA system, so that MA can get ballots out in a timely manner after a September primary but NY can't.

Crowley loses to antisemite who falsely accused Israel of "massacre" in Gaza

    JTA/Times of Israel

Progressive Democrat who accused Israel of Gaza 'massacre' upsets NY incumbent

Congressional primary win for Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a Sanders supporter, seen as a sign of growing strength of Democratic politicians willing to criticize Israel

    By JTA and TOI staff
    27 June 2018, 11:13 pm
A progressive Democrat in New York who called Israel's killing of violent Palestinian protesters on the Gaza border a "massacre" scored a major upset over incumbent Rep. Joe Crowley in a contentious party primary.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, 28, defeated Crowley, 56, by a margin of 58-42 percent in Tuesday's election, toppling a lawmaker who was viewed as the successor to Rep. Nancy Pelosi as speaker of the US House of Representatives.

Ocasio-Cortez belongs to the Democratic Socialists of America and is a supporter of Sen. Bernie Sanders, a Vermont Independent who ran as a Democrat in the 2016 presidential primaries.

New York's 14th Congressional District, which comprises parts of Queens and the Bronx, is overwhelmingly Democrat.

She tweeted on May 14, the day more than 60 Palestinian protesters participating in the "March of Return" were killed on the border with Gaza:
This is a massacre. I hope my peers have the moral courage to call it such. No state or entity is absolved of mass shootings of protesters. There is no justification. Palestinian people deserve basic human dignity, as anyone else. Democrats can't be silent about this anymore.
A Hamas spokesman said after the killings that 50 of the victims were members of the terror group. The Islamic Jihad also said that three of its members were among the dead.

"This proves what so many have tried to ignore: Hamas is behind these riots, and the branding of the riots as ‘peaceful protests' could not be further from the truth," IDF spokesperson Lt. Col. Jonathan Conricus said at the time.

Among the dead, the IDF said, were all eight members of a cell of armed Hamas operatives who were killed in a gun battle as they sought to breach the fence in the northern Gaza Strip.

Ocasio-Cortez later said in an interview that her Puerto Rican roots helped her relate to the Palestinian protesters.

In other elections, US Rep. Jared Polis of Colorado, a five-term congressman from Boulder, won the Democratic Party's nomination for governor. He would be the first Jewish governor in Colorado and its first openly gay person to serve in the post. He will face off in November against Republican State Treasurer Walker Stapleton.

In Maryland, government whistleblower and former intelligence analyst Chelsea Manning lost in her bid to unseat two-term incumbent Democratic Sen. Ben Cardin. Manning and six others were challenging Cardin, who is Jewish, in the state's Democratic primary.

Also in Maryland, former NAACP President Ben Jealous won the Democratic primary for governor and will take on the Republican incumbent, Larry Hogan, in November. Sanders had endorsed Jealous and made appearances on his behalf. His running mate is Susan Turnbull, who is Jewish, a former prominent member of the Democratic National Committee, and former Chair of its Women's Caucus and Women's Leadership Forum.

In New York's 1st Congressional District, businessman Perry Gershon won the five-way Democratic primary for the right to run against Rep. Lee Zeldin, a strong supporter of Israel and of President Donald Trump. Zeldin is one of two Jewish Republicans in the Congress.

Peter Beinart, the liberal Zionist columnist for the Forward and The Atlantic, welcomed Ocasio-Cortez's victory as evidence of a "dramatic shift" toward Democrats who are more willing to criticize Israel on Palestinian human rights, settlement policy and its future as a democratic and Jewish state.

    NY Slimes

Ocasio-Cortez Confronts Crowley Over His 'Third-Party Challenge'

    By Lisa W. Foderaro
    July 12, 2018
So will Representative Joseph Crowley remain on the ballot in November, and challenge Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez as a third-party candidate on the Working Families Party?

That question, raised in an article in The New York Times about third-party politics in New York, took on a life of its own Thursday morning, as Ms. Ocasio-Cortez took to Twitter to complain about Mr. Crowley — with the longtime congressman quickly responding.

Ms. Ocasio-Cortez, 28, wrote on Twitter that Mr. Crowley "stood me up for all 3 scheduled concession calls. Now, he's mounting a 3rd party challenge against me and the Democratic Party — and against the will of @NYWFP."

Bill Lipton, state director of the Working Families Party, said he reached out to the Crowley campaign immediately after Ms. Ocasio-Cortez's upset victory.

The party wanted to put her on its line in November, and had asked Mr. Crowley to vacate the line by running for another office that he had no intention of occupying and little chance of winning, whether a county clerkship or state legislative post. But Mr. Lipton said the Crowley campaign declined to work with them on the maneuver.

It did not take long for Mr. Crowley to respond. In the first of three Twitter posts, he wrote, "Alexandria, the race is over and Democrats need to come together. I've made my support for you clear and the fact that I'm not running. We've scheduled phone calls and your team has not followed through."

As for the fact that his name will remain on the ballot in the November, Mr. Crowley wrote in a second Twitter post that there are "lots of questions about WFP line," adding that he was 'honored to have their support." But, he added, 'for record you can only be removed from the ballot if 1) you move out of NY; 2) die; 3) be convicted of a crime; 4) accept a nomination for another office (in a place I don't live)."

There are no residency requirements, however, for some offices, and election lawyers say Mr. Crowley could put his name in nomination for any number of positions.

Representative Crowley concluded: "I don't plan on moving out of New York, have a clean record, hope God's will is that I don't die, and won't commit what I honestly believe to be election fraud."

The heated exchange was the first break in what had appeared to be a remarkably genial relationship; hours after Ms. Ocasio-Cortez shocked the political world by beating the 10-term Democratic incumbent, Mr. Crowley led his band through a credible version of a Bruce Springsteen song, dedicating it to her.

But on Thursday, Ms. Ocasio-Cortez seemed to suggest that the dedication rang hollow.

In a follow-up Twitter post, she wrote, "So much for 'Born to Run.'"

Why should she calm down? She's making public the fact that Crowley is on a third party line. She is trying to embarrass him into loudly proclaiming that he has no intention of actually mounting an election effort. That's called self-preservation. She would be totally naïve to do anything else.

Ocasio-Cortez is challenging, as is her right under the Queens Democrats' own rules, an apparent attempt by Crowley to backdoor her and somehow stay in Washington. Crowleyosr because he ignored Ocasio-Cortez' campaign, thinking this young upstart couldn't possibly make a serious attempt at knocking him out of office. Crowley broke a cardinal rule in dismissing a primary challenger as a nonstarter, assuming the machine would do his work for him. He couldn't even be bothered to debate her. While he stayed in D.C., Ocasio-Cortez' supporters were out there in the rain and snow, knocking on doors and greeting constituents in the subway. The voters were watching.

Where is it claimed that Ocasio-Cortez does not understand the election system?

And how many New Yorkers of any persuasion do you think understand electoral fusion or other related issues?

Finally, her concerns are legitimate. Just ask John Marchi and Mario Procaccino. And in a more recent example from another state with electoral fusion: Ned Lamont.

How is she uninformed? Is there any statement she's made that reflects a lack of understanding of facts?

And all politicians and politician-wannabees are "loudmouthed." How can you elect someone who doesn't express their opinions? How do you expect them to represent your interests if you don't know how they align?

What are you talking about? She knows exactly how the system works, and she knows she has no power to get him off the ballot. So she is appealing to Democratic Party solidarity to try to make sure he doesn't actually run a campaign against her.

All these people commenting about her here just don't like her because she's a socialist. (I don't like her for that same reason.) But then they try to claim other false negatives about her - its not enough for them to say, damn I wish she hadn't won against that arrogant fool.

IAWTP. I actually wish Crowley could run a third party campaign and win.

He could run a third party campaign, and probably not win. That would be worse for the Democrats than the current situation.

Crowley is the Queens County Democratic Chairman. As a party official he cannot remain in his position and not fully support a Democratic candidate. His remaining on the ballot means he is not fully supporting the Democratic candidate. If, as he claims, he cannot be removed from the ballot, he cannot fulfill his party position obligations.

One objection to Sanders during 2016, was that a progressive candidate could not be elected. This objection was counter to the polls that showed that Sanders would have fared much better than Clinton against every Republican - including Trump. The national Democratic Party is controlled by those who subscribe to this theory. By staying on the ballot, Crowley will reduce Ocasio-Cortez' victory margin. This will be used by the national Democratic Party to continue the same policies that lost them control of Congress.

I don’t like her because she’s 28 years old and thinks she knows more about the real world than people much older than her.

As I said, I don't like her either. However, you are way off base in criticizing her recent attempts to embarrass Crowley off the ballot. That is savvy politics on her part and in fact reflects favorably on her as a 28-year old.
