It's about 30 or 40 years ago that I realized I had paler skin that most people I passed on the sidewalks of Roosevelt Avenue. A few minutes ago, I tried to learn some statistics of Woodside 11377: Population 90,000. Median household income in 2010: $51,000. People born outside the United States: 52,000. White ancestry alone: 44,000. Black alone 2,200. Hispanic or Latino: 35,000. Asian alone, 33,000. White, not hispanic or Latino 18,000. (Discrepancy with above, maybe caused by phrasing of census question.)--- Source: --- The bulletin at St. Sebastian's under-the-el is trilingual: English, Spanish, Korean, with a reference to Filipino devotions. At St. Teresa, the announcements are in English and Spanish. --- The 14th CD includes a chunk of The Bronx: Throggs Neck, Pelham Parkway. --- The passersby I met on Roosevelt Avenue also had hopes, desires, teeth, and smiles. They are part of our world, and I am willing to share it. And Donovan's pub is at 58th Street. |
