Trump did not say what everyone thinks he said.When he said that he recognized Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, he did not mean all of Jerusalem. He meant West Jerusalem, the part of the city that has been within Israel since 1947. He never said that East Jerusalem and the Old City were being recognized as part of the Israeli capital. The future status of these areas are still to be negotiated. This should come as a surprise to nobody as the Knesset has been in Jerusalem practically since Day 1. Of course, the Palestinians want all of Jerusalem as their capital, so the smallest gesture that goes against that sets them off. Of course, the lefty media will never be honest about what Trump really said because it doesn't fit the template. |

Presidents have generally opposed the bill because they see it as Congress usurping what are typically foreign relations duties taken up by POTUS in his role as head of state.That's your evaluation. Clinton never openly opposed the bill, but he gave himself deniability by letting it become law and using the waiver. In his last weeks at President he actually hinted that he might let the law go into effect, but didn't do it. W and Obama BOTH campaigned (rather loudly in some rallies) that they would make put our embassy in J'lem, but signed all the waivers, and never suffered politically for their lie. But they never said, on signing the waivers, that their executive right was being compromised. Trump also campaigned on it and now has done it, and he is being widely condemned. Guess sometimes it pays to lie. |

The "mandate" thing was used after Reagan elections as a method to try to bully Democratic members of Congress into voting for Republican initiatives, the message basically being if you don't vote for this, you'll get voted out of office.Obviously any attempt to try something like that this time around isn't working, since even Heidi Heitkamp doesn't see any need to vote for Republican initiatives. What I don't understand is the laughable insanity of Republicans who don't make your argument (legitimately elected president) and instead insist that Trump won the popular vote too. |

I'm responding to that age old (meaning since the 1990's) thought that East Jewusalem is going to be a capital of another state giving the "palestinians" an old Christian Capital and an ancient Jewish Capital for two of them. (Ramallah, whom I can't remember the original name at the moment being the former).I browsed through some of the posts hoping that I would see someone talk about the need to separate East Jewusalem as being historically Arab. When, in fact, the city was always majority Jewish until the cleansing between 1948/1967 which gave it it's new demographic. Oh well, maybe next time. |
