It is viewed as a strongly pro-Israel action (whether rightly or wrongly), and therefore does reduce one's ability to be a mediator for a peace settlement.For example, a mediator in a labor negotiation would always be incredibly careful about the words they use to describe a situation under discussion, and would not use a technically correct phrase if it would offend one side. Part of being a successful mediator is to cater to the sensitivities of both sides, whether those sensitivities are reasonable or not. You can well argue that the US should be actively pro-Israel, but then you have to accept the loss of ability to be a successful mediator, which was ftgreene's point. |

Of course the United States could put it's embassy in any city. It seems that our law was crafted as a diplomatic tool to bolster Israel's claim to Jerusalem and to prod the Palestinians into a lasting peace. It's not met it's goal. |

I agree that there has been nothing shown by the "Palestinians" that they have any desire to negotiate a solution and/or follow any accepted agreement. Israel has offered well more than it should only to be spat in its face by everybody.The problem Israel faces is that the "Palestinian" community is growing at a faster rate than the Israeli community. At some point, to maintain a Jewish majority of the electorate, Israel will need to strip them of their rights including the right to vote. Problem is that then makes Israel doing everything that, as Jews, we faced in other countries. |
