I don’t know how one becomes a county clerk in Kentucky, but when she took the job the job requirements were not contrary to the tenets of her faith. Now her responsibilities have been changed to include things she cannot do. I don’t think she should just quit with no recourse. And I am someone who has little tolerance for government officials imposing their religion on others. |

It is not like the law says she is the only clerk whose name is required to be on marriage licenses in the state and everyone else is exempt. If the job description has changed in a way that is legal but she is uncomfortable she should quit |

The clerk of the county signs the license and the couple to be wedded must obtain the license in the county where they want to be wed.Now why the couple couldn't be wedded in a neighboring county and then continue the law suit is a different question. |

The difference between you and the Kentucky County Clerk is that you have collegaues who can perform your functions. If you don't deliver mail on Shavouos, your employer has a whole bunch of other people to choose from to provide that service. On the other hand, if this clerk won't perform a marriage, no one else in the county performs the same role. There's no assistant or substitute county clerk to do it. |

There are now tasks she *refuses* to do. She should resign, and find something else to do. To refuse to fulfill her duties as an elected official is the pinnacle of unprofessional. Her job is not soleminizing unions, it is handling paperwork. She does not "endorse" anything. She enables people to fulfill the legal requirements behind important transactions that effect their lives. If she isn't going to do that, then they need someone else that will. |

Agreed, but I think she's saying that since it's against her religion... Her name cannot be on any license being issued to a same-sex couple. It took it to mean that even her staff cannot issue one because she's still the clerk. |

Yeah we can make all the jokes and snide remarks about her seemingly loose morals and her frequent wedding miles but explain this to me. What happens when she goes on vacation? What happens if she goes for surgery? Is there no one who can act in her place or do all marriages stop in that particular county? It seems simple enough that when she is unable to perform her duties due to her religious beliefs, the same person who would perform her duties when she is on vacation or when she is sick, could do perform her duties and sign the license. END OF DRAMA. |

If it's anything like with county clerks in New York, she doesn't personally sign the papers, but staffers affix a copy of her signature to documents, which is legally equivalent to her own signature as County Clerk. She personally opposes her signature being used to legitimize a same-sex marriage. |

Funny thing is, from my understanding of it, the clerk is endorsing that the two parties are identified and legally qualified (as in not married to someone else, of age, etc.) to be married. Until there are witness signatures on the license, there is no marriage. Clerks do not routinely solemnize marriages, although they can legally. |

Even for people in the south, who I do not hate. What bothers me are two basic things....looking for anyone to pay their bills but themselves while turning around and poaching jobs from the locations where the workers are paying their way effectively, and compromising the rights of citizens, as well as seeking to impose their oppression on us all. |
