Why is turning left so hard for so many people?

Posted by Spider-Pig on Wed Mar 11 09:49:32 2015

You pull into the fucking intersection to wait and then turn left when the light turns red. You don't fucking stop before the line unless the light is already red or there is a car in front of you who knows how to fucking turn.

I not only agree with you; I will point out that New York State law says you should pull up as close to the center of the intersection as possible while waiting to make a left. I would guess intersections where you have a red and green turn arrows are an exception if the arrow is red.

a car in front of you who knows how to fucking turn.

I avoid fucking and turning at the same time. All kinds of injuries are possible.

A red arrow would be an exception (then you'd have to stop behind the line and wait), but in the case of a green arrow only or green/yellow with no red arrow one can still turn left on the regular green.

Not to mention that when they do turn left it takes so much of their mental energy that they have none left over for avoiding pedestrians.

Holy cow!! That is a very big pet peeve of mine. Coming from work I always have to stop at the intersection of East Shore Road and Northern Blvd in Great Neck and 99% of the people do just that. Some won't even enter the intersection when the traffic clears. I always say to myself "why is he/she stopping at a green light and go around them on their right. Then they'll either honk or make a face like I'm in the wrong.
I think it's because those drivers who are used to turning lanes with the yellow and red arrow assume that every intersection is like that even if the green arrow just disappears and they have a green light.

In the Atlantic Archipelago British Isles, Australia, Japan, India et cetera (about 35 percent of the world's countries), driving on the left means everything's reversed.

You'll certainly hate PennsylJersey. People have forgotten the left-turn techniques completely and even pull to the right to make a left in some cases.

BTW, the EUEUEUEUEU claims that the world standard used to be driving on the left—and why? because, they say, most swordsmen were right-handed and it's also easier for right-handed people to mount a horse on its left side. (They also associate "feudal" with "violent" while ignoring the fact that the two greatest wars in the planet's history were not under feudalism.)

Interestingly, I think most if not all of those where I've encountered it are with a green arrow. It wouldn't be a big deal if it were the kind of arrow that follows the solid green phase, but it's always the one where the arrow precedes.

I don't know what you mean by that, but it reminds me of another pet peeve: Oncoming traffic that doesn't signal a right turn so that you have to wait for them on the expectation they're going straight even though you wouldn't if you knew they were turning right. There is actually a perverse incentive not to signal a right turn for that reason.

I heard it the other way around. You rode to the right, passing left-to-left (your non-sword hand) as a friendly gesture, meaning neither of you wanted to engage in fun and games.

BTW, which side you drive on is known as "The Rule of the Road" and quite a bit has been written about it. Driving situations have their own etiquette, for example single track roads with passing spaces.

On the other hand, passing right to right meant that, if your sword were sheathed (which it would usually be, as swords are heavy), you could extend your sword hand as a gesture that you were seriously not going to attack because here is the hand that would be used (this is where handshakes come from), if you showed your left hand, you could still pull your right hand out and attack backhanded.

It seems that until the modern era, driving on the left was more common.

To be perfectly honest with you if I'm making a left and see an oncoming car with their right blinker on for the same street I do not trust the fact that the blinker is legit. I've seen too many cars with their blinker on consistently that I refuse to turn left right in front of a car. Maybe it's the fact I ride motorcycles that I'm cautious in this situation. I always expect a car or two behind me to beep me.

That can be a huge problem. Lots of people think that if there is a green arrow then they have to wait for it, even if there is no red arrow.

And some people don't know how red-light cameras work. They think that if they are not completely finished with their turn when the light turns red that they will be ticketed.

I've had the experience of getting honked at while waiting to turn left when the oncoming traffic has had a small clearing because there were (slow) pedestrians. If I had begun the turn I would have cut off oncoming traffic. Person behind me has to wait. . too bad.

They've also changed a lot of the right-on-red permissions lately in the city. They remove that privilege during school hours. Some notice the change, some don't, so you automatically get honked at for not doing it.

And I've been honked at for not doing right-on-red where permitted because I had a pedestrian RIGHT in front of me, "twelve o'clock."

Going east on Union Tpke approaching New Hyde Park Road, the left lane gives the option to go straight or turn left, but the problem is there's a red light, green left arrow phase. If the first car is going straight he is in the correct lane but holding up everyone behind who desperately needs that turn. And it isn't totally obvious, unless you know the intersection, that there's a green arrow coming (Nassau signal cycles can be quite complicated and vary based on traffic and time of day). Now of course I know better but there was nothing I can do about the first time.
