I disagree and think that a guaranteed minimum income through a negative income tax should be used instead of a minimum wage. Consequently, the minimum wage should be abolished. The minimum wage requires private actors to unilaterally subsidize the government's social goals.Since that isn't going to happen any time soon, for now, the minimum wage ought to be raised. |

The minimum wage is one of the important supports FOR a private economy. Were it not for what should be a guaranteed living wage through law, the outcry to socialize and ensure a living wage would be tremendous. It should be preserved and brought up a level where it produces the ability to support oneself minimally....food, shelter, clothing. If brought to that level nationally, it can be modified to reflect actual living costs in a state or locality. Full time work should enable one to survive. |

The minimum wage is one of the important supports FOR a private economy. Were it not for what should be a guaranteed living wage through law, the outcry to socialize and ensure a living wage would be tremendous.A guaranteed minimum income makes that moot. People would be able to live without work. This would make low wage jobs impossible as no one would bother to take them. |

Of course nobody would take a job that provides less than what you mentioned about a minimum income. However, if work provided for a better living above the minimum, it would be attractive. That's the biggest problem with the existing welfare reform. It does not provide a reward for work, it takes needed benefits (especially in the first months of returning to work, when needs for what might be considered options such as a sufficient wardrobe are acute and unrecognized) away too quickly. |

A guaranteed minimum income would keep wages up for jobs that need to be done, but it would not disincentivize taking a job. The income payment would be diminished, but by less than the amount of the wage. |

You questioned someone's bona fides as an Orthodox Jew based on a comment regarding the literal accuracy of Hebrew Scripture. While Judaism doesn't follow the Catholic model of having a single absolute authority, there is significant weight given to the views of the great Rabbis and religious scholars throughout Jewish history - including when such authorities gave non-literal explanations of Scripture. As such, the individual in question's comments in no way harm his claim to be Orthodox.FYI, there are groups that follow a much more literal reading of Scripture. These include the Samaritans, a tiny but ancient sect that lives primarily in modern-day Nablus (near Mt. Grezim) and the Israeli city of Holon, south of Tel Aviv, and ythe Karaites, a group that lived alongside many more "traditional" Jewish communities through history. Their views, though, are far from Jewish Orthodoxy. subfan |
