The Citi Bikes are interesting; I think the program has promise if they iron out the kinks. I always leave the bike on 3rd gear; as I own an 18-speed bike often set to the highest speed (3 front x 6 rear), I've little use for the lower settings.Favorite path so far on CitiBike: via 9 Ave southbound; that bike path eventually cuts across Bleecker St to the Bowery, where you can go north or south. I typically navigate my way to the Chrystie St paths from there. Of course, the Hudson River greenway is my fave, but CitiBike doesn't give one enough time to truly enjoy it IMHO... visit my blog! |

If you subscribe to the annual pass, you can keep it out for 45 minutes for no extra charge, but then overtime is expensive.No rule (yet) says you can't return one and check out another right away, though. |

That's an amusing way of dealing with it. As an out of towner now, I'd be looking at it as grabbing one near NYP, heading on down to lower east side, grab something to eat, hit a bike path or two, wander around and see what's changed over in alphabet city, maybe a mugging or two and then head back. Can't do all that in a half hour, especially if the cops take their time getting that police report written up. :) |

Well I am on LES, and i like the placement of bikes along the sidewalk of Tompkins Square Park, but not where they have them in the streets. Who wants to back a bike off the rack into traffic?? Besides pitting bikes vs cars, delivery trucks now double park near the bikes and have to wade through the bikes to make a delivery |

When biking myself, I'd go for distance or else I'd just hoof it or take the train. When I lived there, it wasn't uncommon for me to walk from Canal Street to the Bronx and take the six hours on foot. But I guess if that's how it's getting played, I could probably do that too. :) |

Can't do all that in a half hour,The daily and weekly "memberships" give only a 30 minute free ride before time charges start. So far, the average trip has been around 2.5 miles (50 blocks) in about 20 minutes. That's a 7.5 mph pace. Your first trip would be from NYP to the LES to where you eat. The second trip would be looking at Alphabet City and heading to the Hudson River Bike Greenway. The third trip would be from the Greenway back to NYP. |

I was staying near 51/Lex, and walked to 5 different racks eventually getting all the way to Sixth Ave -- not a Bike to be found.One possible explanation is there are not enough bikes. The bikes and stations were stored in the Navy Yard. They got flooded during Sandy. The installation was scaled back. Instead of 10,000 bikes they currently have only 6000 available. Instead of 600 stations, they are using only 400. They have not placed similar restrictions on demand. |
