I was staying near 51/Lex, and walked to 5 different racks eventually getting all the way to Sixth Ave -- not a Bike to be found. I guess people are taking the bikes from midtown to downtown after work.When I got back to my hotel, I checked the interactive map on their website and it seems most of midtown was void of bikes (some of the sites showed one or two bikes available -- but I suspect these were broken bikes, some of the racks I visited had one or two broken bikes that could not be checked out). There were one or two midtown racks that showed 30+ bikes available -- but I wasn't going to go back out only to find that the interactive map was not correct. It seems unlikely that there was a bicycle oasis in the midst of the midtown desert. This morning I decided to try again -- I found the bikes rack at 47/park well stocked. The first bike I grabbed was missing a pedal, but I was able swap that bike out rather painlessly. The next bike was no problem and I happily cycled to Penn Station going west on 47th, south on 7th Ave and then across 33rd street to the rack at 8th Ave. riding through Midtown traffic was far easier than I'd expected -- the only hassle was figuring out how I was supposed to navigate the pedestrian mall at Times Square Later in the day, I took another bike for a spin riding from Union Square back up to 47/park. I made much better time than many of the buses going up Third Ave. Overall, I was very happy with the service. As long as the bikes remain in good shape (I was a little concerned after the pedal-less first bike), I'll use them every time I'm in town. CG |
