The injury toll inflicted by vehicles on the non-motoring public has been under-reported. |

NYPD purposely makes these legally mandated reports difficult to analyze. You can manually search by vehicle type and look for an injured pedestrian and no other vehicle type for the accident. |

One requirement has been for the company to carry liability insurance and cover the City. There has been a history of bike share in other large US cities. I'd guess that the insurance companies know how to price their premiums. if they weren't noice they would already have a bike Locking a bike is one big hassle for people running errands. There's always the danger of the bike being stolen or damaged. Bike Share eliminates that problem for people who already have a bike. The trade-off is walking 1 or 2 blocks. So far, the busiest bike share stations have been around Penn Station and the PABT. There's a market for commuters wishing to go crosstown after entering the City. |

This will complete the initial system with 10,000 bikes and 600 stations. |

Thanks.You know, when I lived in Queens, I always wanted NYC to pass a law requiring apartment buildings to provide space to park bicycles. There's no space in an apartment for one. If people had a room outside the apartment to park the bike, you might see bike usage increase. In fact, instead of renting bikes, the city should install bikes stands like the ones used for Citibike and charge for the space. |

The bike rack at 44th/5th was nearly empty a few times. If the system had been accepting one-time rentals (apparently it won't do that until early June) I would have certainly used one to run some errands.I did have a chance to ride one that a friend had taken out -- it feels like a reasonable bike, but I think it only has 3 speeds. That may not be a problem in flat Manhattan, but if the program ever expands more broadly (especially to upper Manhattan and the Bx) they may need bikes with a bit more range. On the negative side, I was in a cab in slow traffic coming north on 6th Ave and there was some knucklehead riding a Citibike the against the flow of traffic. I'll be back again briefly next week and hopefully will be able to tool around on one a bit. |

Based on your 10% population number (about 800,000 people) that's still only 2.96%. I agree with those who see big lawsuits ahead for Citibank and the city itself.No racks yet on S.I. No demand here but I think the program could work in places like Great Kills Park or Miller Field. Put the bikes in the parking lots where people can drive to them. It might work. |

In a rental business the principal income is from the rental fee vs. advertising from bike share. The price structure is also different. I was staying near 51/Lex, and walked to 5 different racks eventually getting all the way to Sixth Ave -- not a Bike to be found. I guess people are taking the bikes from midtown to downtown after work.When I got back to my hotel, I checked the interactive map on their website and it seems most of midtown was void of bikes (some of the sites showed one or two bikes available -- but I suspect these were broken bikes, some of the racks I visited had one or two broken bikes that could not be checked out). There were one or two midtown racks that showed 30+ bikes available -- but I wasn't going to go back out only to find that the interactive map was not correct. It seems unlikely that there was a bicycle oasis in the midst of the midtown desert. This morning I decided to try again -- I found the bikes rack at 47/park well stocked. The first bike I grabbed was missing a pedal, but I was able swap that bike out rather painlessly. The next bike was no problem and I happily cycled to Penn Station going west on 47th, south on 7th Ave and then across 33rd street to the rack at 8th Ave. riding through Midtown traffic was far easier than I'd expected -- the only hassle was figuring out how I was supposed to navigate the pedestrian mall at Times Square Later in the day, I took another bike for a spin riding from Union Square back up to 47/park. I made much better time than many of the buses going up Third Ave. Overall, I was very happy with the service. As long as the bikes remain in good shape (I was a little concerned after the pedal-less first bike), I'll use them every time I'm in town. CG |
