I always leave a cash tip. because A) restaurants often steal part of the tip. and B) that way waiter of waitress doesn't have to pay taxes on it.There are a couple of problems with that way of thinking. First is that the waiter/waitress does have to pay taxes on that amount. By leaving them cash, you encourage the possibility that they illegally don't report that cash and don't pay tax on it. Second is that many restaurants pool the tips and have a means of distribution such that the non-front line staff also get a share (busboys, etc.). By giving a cash tip to the waiter you increase the possibility that the non-client facing staff (who probably need the money even more than the waiter) gets screwed. |
