It isn't the customer's job to encourage tax compliance, but isn't it the citizen's responsibility?

When a doctor or a contractor asks you to pay cash, anyone with a functioning brain knows it is because they plan to under-report their income and pay less tax as a result. This should be highly offensive to people -- especially those who earn all or most of their income by reportable means. When that doctor under-reports their income and under-pays their "fair share" of taxes, who do you think is making up the difference?

The Upper West Side therapist crowd are probably the most offensive examples -- taking in hordes of (likely unreported) cash payments and then voting for others to pay their "fair share".
