Ethnic names do impede your progress, especially when they are black ethnic names. Like he said there have been several studies that back this up. I can remember one or two being reported where they made resumes using uniquely African American names and then made the same resumes using more generic names and the resumes with generic names were very significantly more likely to be called for an interview. I'm sure that extends to many other aspects of life where your name makes an impression. Not that you can't be successful with a black ethnic name, but it will be harder.

Oh and that reminds me of another study or maybe it was the same one. Do you know what the most common reason given for people deciding to not hire black males? IIRC it was "I don't want any trouble." Black men are seen as threatening and potentially dangerous by many people that hire.
