Not so fast. In NYC, the EMS system is comprised of FDNY, various "participating provider" hospitals that operate their trucks in the city's 911 system, commercial contractors like AMR and TrabsCare, and neighborhood volunteer ambulance corps. Regardless of which type of service you're with, you must still take and pass a state EMT course (at a minimum), and for FDNY, attend the EMS Academy after that. EMTs must take and pass refresher training every three years to maintain their certification (and their jobs), and if you work for a hospital like Lenox Hill, there are core competency requirements there, too.

Daquan, BTW, most certainly did work in the "real world", as you define it, moonlighting in the ER at Lutheran. EMS, like transit and the NYPD--which is filled with cops that have all manner of ethnic names--is still a complex, highly demanding occupation that does not suffer fools gladly. I will however, grant you that almost all of the people in FDNY who have "exotic" names, are on the EMS side of the department--something that goes all the way back to the old Department of Hospitals--as opposed to the firefighting side, which is almost totally white and male.
