Re: Being A Lyft Passenger While Black

There's an old saying that "freedom isn't free", and it's true. But the way you actually fight to protect freedom isn't by fighting enemies of the government in some far-away country. It's more likely to be by standing up to the government in some way.

If I, as a passenger, were asked for no apparent reason to show ID to police, I certainly would ask why. If they didn't give a reason, I would probably point out that the law doesn't require me to show it. But if they continued to insist, yeah, I guess I'd show it to them. But it would leave a bad taste in my mouth, so to speak. The only way to prevent repeated actions of this sort by the police from reducing the right not to be subjected to them to a paper fiction is for there to be people who do stand up for their rights, even if it involves a degree of risk. Proving a point can benefit not just yourself, but others who will be in similar situations in the future.

I don't know if that's what the guy in this case was thinking or not. Possibly it was, and he expected that, at most, he would have to make his point "in the appropriate venue" - in front of a judge he might have to wait a few hours to see, who would then set him free and admonish the cops involved not to subject others to the same treatment. Anyway, I understand that action has now been taken against at least one of the officers involved. I hope the man who was injured can collect damages which will serve as some kind of deterrent to similar future events. (That's assuming he did not in fact initiate the physical confrontation or at least did not do anything that could conceivably justify the level of force that was used against him in that video. No evidence has come out at this point to suggest that he did.)
