I also have criticism for self-avowed socialists who want to make sweeping reforms of whole business sectors or nationalize currently private systems outright.

They're getting traction because moderates/centrists aren't making progress on key issues, such as income inequality and the environment. Those areas are either staying still or getting worse over time. If the moderates/centrists won't do squat, people are going to look to the extremists for a different way of getting it done.
