MTA takeover |
|
|
Posted by hound on Thu Oct 11 01:43:14 2007 I've been told by several people that Nov. 15 is when the MTA is coming to LIB for a full takeover & house cleaning. Anybody else out there have any credible info on this? If it's true, it's certainly long overdue! |

LIB is already an arm of the MTA, do you mean that they are going to fold it into MTA Bus ? What would be the purpose ? From what I have seen it certainly needs improving, but what would be gained ? |

Posted by The TransitMan on Thu Oct 11 09:55:05 2007, in response to MTA takeover, posted by hound on Thu Oct 11 01:43:14 2007. I've been told that it's on November 1st. Several bus operators who work at MTA Long Island Bus as well as bus operators AND MANAGEMENT at New York City Transit told me that the MTA has already moved into BOTH depots (Mitchell Field and Rockville Centre) and have started to "shake-up" things already in L.I. Bus management. I'm not going to list who's been removed from their positions because that's not soemthing that should be shared on here.MTA Long Island Bus will fold under the MTA Bus Company, which means that the bus will be renumbered, orange stripe peeled off for an ALL blue stripe and destination signs will be changed. For example, you might see something like this for the N6: N6 HEMPSTEAD Now it could say: N6 HEMPSTEAD Hempstead Bus Term via Hillside Av Via Hempstead Tpke or something like that. That's what I've been told BUT could they push the takeover point back...who knows but November 1st, keep an eye out live you in Queens especially in Nassau County. |

Long Island Bus is an operation of Nassau County contracted to the MTA. A full takeover of service would require the MTA to purchase all of the buses from Nassau County. This will make an interesting operation, as LIB buses have Talking Bus and MTAB buses do not. Because of this one issue, don't expect to see much fleet mixing. |

All blue would be for the five boroughs. (In which the to agencies are intertwined). Blue and orange would remain for Nassau. If they ever took over any other county, such as Bee Line, then the current colors would remain for that county. |

Uh oh...so let's play follow the money:1) Has Nassau County signed a deal to fund these improvements? LIB has been crying about money FOREVER. Since this is an MTA operation ALREADY, the addition of new resources has to come from SOMEWHERE. 2) If Nassau County has not agreed to cough up more money for operations, then who is paying for this endeavor? Follow the money. It is important to make sure that the CITY OF NEW YORK is not being billed for any of this because they have a contract that forces them to pay whatever the MTA asks for. I have a feeling that some congestion pricing hush money is headed to Nassau County just as Westchester's hush money came in the MetroCard. |

If they keep the rosters separate, since the LI buses probably will not be swapped around with the ones in the boros, for the reasons stated (automitic announcements).Otherwise, they could just put "N's in front of the numbers. |

Posted by JAzumah on Fri Oct 12 10:33:48 2007, in response to Re: MTA takeover, posted by Olog-hai on Fri Oct 12 06:51:23 2007. Th issue is that the MTA is going to run service at a higher level than Nassau can pay for. Previously, they stuck to the budget, which meant that LIB could do very little with their service. The idea behind Regional Bus includes the pooling of resources to "lower the cost" of running buses and my concern is that Nassau County is going to be let off the hook for the money. This leaves NYC to fund a large chunk of the hole. |

It is a takeover, as the MTA does not own the buses or the facilities or even the routes. It is a CONTRACT OPERATION, much like Transport of Rockland is contracted to Coach USA. The difference is that the MTA brands the service owned by Nassau County as MTA Long Island Bus and uses MTA fare structure and fare media. In order to integrate LIB into the regional bus system, the MTA has to purchase all of the buses, facilities, and routes from Nassau County. For an administrative purpose, right now Long Island Bus is on a different payroll from MTA Bus Company. By merging the two companies (as they are separate companies) they also merge payrolls and seniority lists, although I am unsure whether or not switching from Nassau division depots to MTAB Queens, Brooklyn, or Bronx division depots will be possible because of union restrictions. It will be possible to see an ex. Long Island Bus Orion 5 on 3rd Avenue on the Bx15 or a C40LF in Hempstead TC that would not be possible without full purchase of the buses from Nassau County. While on the outside it may say MTA Long Island Bus, and while the operators and maintenance people are employed by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, it's really a Nassau County operation. And even if it were an MTA operation, it is still a merger of two different companies within the MTA, so it's not just a renaming thing. On November 1, 2007 Long Island Bus will cease to exist and it will become a part of MTA Bus Company, not only in name, but in administration and ownership as well. |
