It is a takeover, as the MTA does not own the buses or the facilities or even the routes. It is a CONTRACT OPERATION, much like Transport of Rockland is contracted to Coach USA. The difference is that the MTA brands the service owned by Nassau County as MTA Long Island Bus and uses MTA fare structure and fare media. In order to integrate LIB into the regional bus system, the MTA has to purchase all of the buses, facilities, and routes from Nassau County.For an administrative purpose, right now Long Island Bus is on a different payroll from MTA Bus Company. By merging the two companies (as they are separate companies) they also merge payrolls and seniority lists, although I am unsure whether or not switching from Nassau division depots to MTAB Queens, Brooklyn, or Bronx division depots will be possible because of union restrictions. It will be possible to see an ex. Long Island Bus Orion 5 on 3rd Avenue on the Bx15 or a C40LF in Hempstead TC that would not be possible without full purchase of the buses from Nassau County. While on the outside it may say MTA Long Island Bus, and while the operators and maintenance people are employed by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, it's really a Nassau County operation. And even if it were an MTA operation, it is still a merger of two different companies within the MTA, so it's not just a renaming thing. On November 1, 2007 Long Island Bus will cease to exist and it will become a part of MTA Bus Company, not only in name, but in administration and ownership as well. |
